Kiribati's 33 scattered coral atolls make markets fragmented and financial access costly, yet the country holds a sovereign wealth fund worth around USD 1.1 billion, several times its annual GDP. It's a pattern increasingly seen across frontier economies: the capital exists, but the bottleneck lies in accessing and channelling it toward productive use.

Bijon Islam, Co-founder and CEO of LightCastle Partners, spent two weeks with the Development Bank of Kiribati, exploring how SME finance could be scaled and restructured to support locally led economic growth.

Bangladesh has met all three UN LDC graduation criteria in three consecutive reviews since 2018, yet its graduation timeline has been extended twice, with the latest proposed date moving to 2029. Meanwhile, more than 80% of export earnings still come from RMG, while the EU’s GSP+ covers only 66% of tariff lines compared with the broader preferences Bangladesh currently enjoys.

The analysis explores whether the additional three years can become a window to strengthen competitiveness and address structural gaps, or whether repeated extensions risk delaying the reforms Bangladesh needs to navigate changing trade rules and prepare for graduation.
