☁️ 5 Myths around freelancing ☁️
1️⃣ There is no job security – TRUE and FALSE
If you lose your job as an employee in one company, you lose all of your income. However, if you lose a client as a freelancer, you only lose a percentage of your income. Also, replacing a client can be much easier and quicker than finding another job.
2️⃣ Freelancing is more stressful – TRUE
Freelancers have to manage all areas of their business and often find themselves in the beginning under financial stress and overwhelming workload. On top of that, taking holidays takes more planning as a freelancer who must anticipate having no income during this off period.
3️⃣ You don’t have a boss – FALSE
As a freelancer, you have two bosses: your client and yourself. As your own boss, you have to keep yourself accountable, get things done, develop a business strategy and take actions. You’ll have to set a work rhythm and manage your time to ensure that even the most unpleasant tasks like bookkeeping are done.
4️⃣ You can work wherever and whenever you want – MOSTLY TRUE
Freelancers have to work with their clients’ schedule and make time for calls for example. But if you’re a digital freelancer, you generally have the flexibility to choose the schedule and the place that works best for you (all you may need is wifi!).
5️⃣ Freelancing is not a real business – FALSE
I like to call freelancers as small business owners to encourage them to think like a business. Because freelancers have all the responsibilities of business owners: budgeting and accounting, marketing, contracts, client acquisition and relationship, growth strategy, investment decisions, brand development, outsourcing and partnership development, project management…
