In these somewhat bleak and gloomy months we can use a dash of colour, don’t you think?
These are all glass paints; enamels and grisailles.

Here are some pictures of the process of making this miniature stained glass landscape. The design was based on the wedding card of the couple, beautifully drawn by the sister of the bride. It didn’t need much adjustments to make it work in stained glass, I totally loved it!
After choosing and cutting the glass, I did some painting to evoke the Tuscan landscape. I didn’t put any lead on the top of the panel because I liked the natural organic shape of it, as this was the edge of the glass slab.

Even though I try to keep my workspace tidy and neat, somehow when I start painting (or working or living or being in general tbh) it gets chaotic very fast. Sometimes I think I thrive better in a little mess. Until a certain point.
It’s a talent I guess. Stay messy my friends!

The old lead of these two doorpanels had to be replaced because it was too weak to support the glass. Some pieces of glass were broken and had to be replaced. Lovely colours!

When making a repetitive pattern in stained glass one must work very precise and that sometimes means doing the same thing over and over again.
For the exercise panel in the next photos I had to restart cutting my glass at least three times. Based on an 18th century pattern. In the end, perseverance wins!

Working with glass means soOoOo many options: lush colours, unique structures. Opaque, opalescent or transparant. Handmade, one-of-a-kind, mouthblown or industrialized glass. Always something different.

Some time ago I attended a two day masterclass screenprinting on glass by . As a traditional technique girl, this was a new subject to me and I absolutely loved it!
The same grisailles, enamels and silver stains can be used as in traditional glass painting.
For me it will never replace handpainted glass but it is a fascinating skill and an additional technique. There are good examples of using it for some restorationprojects too. The possibilities are endless and I will keep experimenting with it.

Come and have a look inside the glass kiln! There are different types of paint that can be used on glass and they can require a different firing process. That sometimes means one piece of painted glass needs to be fired several times before it’s finished.

For this personal project I have yet to finish, I had to make lots of glass leaves. Experimenting with flashed glass and ways of applying paint was fun, but at some point I couldn’t stop making more 🫢. Now I’m left with 50+ glass leaves making it extra though to choose. Which one is your favourite?

The red centre piece on this panel is sand blasted flashed glass. First, a design is transferred to a vinyl sticker on the glass. The areas where the sticker is cut out, the surface gets abraded by the blasting medium and the thin layer of colour on the flashed glass disappears, resulting in a strong and detailed image.

Work in progress. For already more than two years, I can’t seem to finish this panel with leaves. The white glass was quite a challenge to cut and meanwhile a lot of the leaves got painted. This complicated leading might take some time. Maybe this fall I will find the courage 🍁
