Human Library Organization is a global initiative that started in Denmark in 2000. It was founded by Ronni Abergel, his brother Dany Abergel, and colleagues Asma Mouna and Christoffer Erichsen as a project for the Roskilde Festival. The idea was to create a space where people could challenge their own biases by engaging in open and honest conversations with others.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀:
Instead of borrowing books, visitors "borrow" real people who have volunteered to share their life stories. These individuals—called "Human Books"—come from diverse backgrounds and often represent groups that face stereotypes, stigma, or discrimination. Readers can engage in conversations with them to "unjudge" and understand their experiences firsthand.
𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 & 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁:
- Promotes dialogue, empathy, and understanding
- Challenges prejudice and stereotypes
- Creates a safe space for difficult conversations
- Operates in libraries, schools, workplaces, festivals, and public events
- Since its launch, the Human Library has spread to over 80 countries, offering a unique way to foster human connection and inclusion.
