This question never gets old: "How to motivate my team?"
Two days ago, we were guests at a Radio Show on the Bulgarian National Radio, and Yana Spiridonova asked us this question again.
In order to answer, we have to agree on what we mean by . It is not just to make you work more, it is to make to truly want to do your job, to be in the flow, to work like crazy, to be creative and to have this magical internal driver that makes you stay late and do more and more just because you feel it deep that it gives you satisfaction. Having this Motivation makes you 10x creative and 10x productive, and you working late is no longer a sacrifice, it's a drug for you.
Two sides of the story:
- Demotivators
- Motivators
Having that said, we now have to discuss two very different aspects - Motivators and Demotivators. Everyone reading this is asking themselves, "Ok, what about the money?"
Of course, the absence of and fair pay will demotivate you. In the same way, anything that makes you feel bad or in danger will not make you motivated (in the sense of what we agreed motivation is)
So, eliminate all the , do your best here. Just have in mind, this will not motivate the people, it will stop demotivating them.
Motivation comes from inside. It's an internal feeling. So, to work on the motivation means to find these internal . In the scientific readings, they call them "Intrinsic Motivators".
Three very famous ones are Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose. It is proven that in a knowledge economy, people feel an internal driver to do more and to create: When they have a clear purpose and goals, and see how they contribute to them; When they have the power to make decisions, to experiment, and to innovate; When they improve and see their own development.
* Autonomy – The ability to make decisions, experiment, innovate.
* Mastery – The chance to grow, improve, and see progress.
* Purpose – A clear “why” and knowing how your work contributes.
There are also other, more personal Intrinsic motivators, like the sense of honor, or status, or freedom... these are stronger and weaker for different people, and it is different for different personalities. So, being a leader, you have to know your people very well.
What kind of Leader are you?!
