📢 Learning Words in Foreign Languages

You don’t need fluency to build trust internationally — small language efforts often matter more than perfect grammar.

Many professionals ask: “Do I have to speak their language to connect?” The short answer: no. But using a few words from someone’s language can reduce distance and show respect.

Saying a simple word or phrase does something powerful:
• It shows respect.
• It shows effort.
• It shows you don’t expect everyone to adapt only to you.

I’ve seen this again and again in cross‑cultural work. For example, using a local greeting or saying “thank you” in a client’s or business partner’s language at the start of a meeting usually changes the energy — people relax, smile, and open up more.

Because building rapport isn’t only about clarity — it’s about intention.

Practical things to learn before your next international interaction:
• how to say “thank you”
• how to greet properly
• one short phrase relevant to the context

You don’t need perfection; the effort is what people remember. These small details often change how your message is received across cultures.

✨ Why this works: A few words in someone’s language signals respect and effort, which speeds trust-building.

What happens if you don’t: Conversations can feel more distant and it takes longer to build a stronger working relationship.

🫡 I made a practical English guide with six strategies and 100+ AI prompts to help you engage better in international interactions. For a limited time, I’m sharing it free and would love your feedback.

📢 Breaking the Ice

The first few minutes of a conversation can shape the trajectory of a relationship. Especially in international settings.

Many professionals I work with ask: “How do I start a conversation naturally?” Usually, they default to: jump straight into business or stay too surface-level.

The result? Efficient exchanges… but little trust.

Breaking the ice isn’t about being “charismatic.” It’s about making the other person feel comfortable, safe, and willing to respond.

After working across cultures, I’ve noticed this simple rule:
👉 Openings should be simple, relevant, human, and non‑threatening.

Small signals that help someone feel safe:
• Use a warm, relaxed tone and open body language
• Offer a brief observation or shared reference rather than asking something too personal
• Allow them to join the conversation or keep it light and simple.

When I enter a meeting, I try to share a short positive remark — for example, something I noticed about the office (the building, the design of the space, or a painting on the wall), a sincere compliment on what someone is wearing (a tie, scarf, or piece of jewelry), or, if I’m in a foreign city, an observation about people I’ve met, a place I visited, or a quick request for a restaurant recommendation.

These small openings reduce pressure for both sides and make honest responses more likely. Listen actively, acknowledge briefly, and follow up only if it feels natural.

🌎 Cultural tip when “breaking the ice”:
• Relationship‑based cultures: people take longer (hours or days) to build trust, so be patient and willing to share a bit more about yourself.
• Transactional cultures: initial chats could be shorter (15-20 mins, perhaps). Acknowledge the connection, then move on.

A simple shift you can apply. 👇
Next time, try asking: “What has been most interesting for you so far about (the event, the project, the trip)?”

It shows presence, invites a real exchange, and makes the other person feel comfortable responding.

✨ Why this works:
Simple icebreakers create comfort and trust quickly, so the conversation flows naturally.

What happens if you don’t:
Without an icebreaker, interactions can feel transactional and relationship building slows down.

🫡 I made a practical English guide with six strategies and 100+ AI prompts to help you use effective icebreakers in international interactions. For a limited time, I’m sharing it free and would love your feedback on how it works with global colleagues, clients, or partners.

📢 Identifying Common Interests

Most international conversations don’t fail because of language. They fail because there’s no connection.

And when that connection is missing, you feel it quickly.

The conversation moves… but something doesn’t fully land.

One of the simplest, and most overlooked, ways to build that connection across cultures is this:
👉 Find common ground (music, sport, food, national icons)

But many professionals jump straight into business, especially in fast-paced environments.

The result?
🙄 Efficient conversations… but limited trust.

🌎 After working across 70+ countries, I’ve seen how a small cultural reference can completely change the energy of a meeting. Whenever I travel across Latin America, for example, I usually bring up a local football (soccer) team, a well-known artist, or ask about places people recommend visiting.

Not in a forced way, just naturally, as part of the conversation.

And it makes a difference.

Because that small effort shows:
• Respect
• Curiosity
• Willingness to connect

And people respond differently when they feel that.

A simple shift you can apply. 👇

Before your next international meeting, take 5 minutes to learn:
• a popular sport or athlete in the country
• an iconic dish or where to try it
• a current local festival or cultural event

Not to impress, but to connect.

✨ Why this works:
It helps you build trust earlier in the conversation, instead of trying to recover it later.

What happens if you don’t:
The interaction stays more transactional, and it becomes harder to build a stronger relationship over time.

🫡 I’ve put together a practical English guide with six strategies and 100+ AI prompts (questions tied to each strategy) to equip you to engage more effectively in international interactions.

For a limited time, I’m sharing it for free and would love your feedback on whether it helps in conversations with global colleagues, clients, or business partners.
