Kuensel's follow-up report on luxury hotels pushing back on wage criticism reinforces what many in the industry know first hand high room rates do not equal high net margins once you factor in seasonality, debt servicing, and high operational costs.

The real conversation now needs to move toward solutions: How do we balance realistic hotel P&Ls with living wages for frontline team members? As shared earlier, investing in localizing senior leadership roles remains one of the clearest paths to keeping high value compensation within Bhutan while reducing long term hotel overhead.

Luxury hotel operators have hit back at criticism over wages, arguing that high operating costs and a four-month low season mean high room rates do not necessarily translate into big profits.

Paro hotels and airlines lose out first. But do Phuntsholing hotels gain anything? Not really. With the daily SDF, tourists are likely crossing the border straight away to avoid paying for an extra night in Bhutan.
A double hit to the local tourism economy. to avoid paying for an extra night in Bhutan.

More than 70 percent of international tourists, along with a growing number of Bhutanese, are now bypassing Paro Airport for India's Bagdogra Airport to save tens of thousands on airfares.
