LIVE THE LIFE YOU LOVE

Did you know that according to www.businessoffashion.com the fashion global industry is currently valued at USD2.6 trillion. My goal is to make it possible for African fashion business start-ups and emerging designers that's YOU, to have a share in that.
But you have to realise that there will be no one in the world that cares as much about the work you create and the dreams you chase, more than you. So you might as well go and do the work God gifted you to do, by creating the things you love, working on projects you are passionate about and pushing past what others might even think is impossible.

Today I'm taking a moment to reflect on this journey of becoming the best African fashion business coaching consultant and how incredibly grateful I am to spend my days working with Start up and Emerging fashion designers, engaging with fashion industry experts and building amazing course content. All of which has allowed me to pursue my dreams and make them a reality.

And maybe, just maybe, inspiring another person on this beautiful continent to pursue their fashion business dreams too - and of course make good money at it.

So, are you living your dream and is it paying you? Please share your experience by dropping me comment below 👇

LOOKING FOR A PUSH?

If you are emerging and looking for nudge or a push to increase sales then look no further. I like to plan, so sticky notes and a blank wall are my best friends to start the process for 2023.

But below are 3 tips I'd like to share to help your planning to increase your fashion revenue

Tip 1. NUMBERS AND DATA

learn how to read these if you want to be knowledgeable because it will make a huge difference to your business. The data is readily available and the best news is that it's free. It tells you which of your styles are selling or not. Which of your promotions grabbed your customers attention. It will tell you the engagement rate of your social media community. It will tell you what is working and what isn't.

Tip 2. DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF YOUR WEBSITE

It's purpose is to sell! Period!
Is it designed to do this efficiently? Are your products front and center in the images, are your images crisp and clear and is all the supporting information readily available; colours, size charts. Is the buying experience pleasant and easy? Are your call to action buttons clear and do they work? Are your payment gateways and forms simple? Are your shipping costs as promised, I know just how annoying I find it when an e-commerce site has not been transparent about those. If your site is buyer friendly you will get purchases making it a beautiful win-win for everyone.

Tip 3. AUTOMATE YOUR WEBSITE

Automation helps you to create an organised schedule and organise your tasks more effectively, because managing your time well and balancing several tasks is a daily matter.

Creating and posting Social media content was taking me up to an hour everyday, now I take 2-3 hrs a month to plan and develop my social feed for a week. Do the same for your email marketing messages. If you Automate everything this will free you up to move on to to the next interesting and revenue generating task on your to-do list. For example visiting a fabric supplier or meeting a corporate partner.

THINK LIKE A CEO

Entering the Kim Sacks Gallery always makes me feel like I'm entering an African Palace and it got me thinking. As an African fashion entrepreneur I am in charge of the destiny of my business, I am the CEO and queen of my castle so to speak. So am I making the right choices to support my business and the life I want? How do you do this I hear you say, well let me share a few tips I listed...

Tip 1
CREATE A CLEAR VISION AND PLAN
CEO's must be clear about where she is going with the business. Do you want to stay small or to employ more people to grow a bigger brand. Write 10 big goals that will have the greatest impact on your business

Tip 2
BREAK DOWN YOUR GOALS INTO SPECIFIC STEPS
Take each goal and break it into small steps, as a CEO you don't just have a big picture vision, you also have to have a specific plan to achieve those goals.

Tip 3
DO YOUR RESEARCH
A CEO must be constantly learning and growing. CIAF posted on the Daciki and it's history yesterday. Insightful for me because not only am a lover and collector of African fabrics, I will be able to include it in my course content as well.

Tip 4
DELEGATING
CEO's have their own strengths and weaknesses, and you come to learn this because when you start your brand you are required to handle all the tasks of your business. This way you also learn that you can't do it all, so finding someone to do what you can't will give you the time to do what you can and enjoy.

Tip 5
BUDGET! BUDGET! BUDGET!
CEO'S know how to keep an eye on their budgets. How much they can spend, what to spend it on and where their additional income is coming from. Creating a solid budget will make it easier to ensure that your queendom runs smoothly.

Having a CEO's mindset is a very different way of thinking for a fashion entrepreneur, but you will come to learn that it is completely worth it, DM me if this helps you to go forward in your business

FIND YOUR VOICE

I set up my fashion consultancy because I wanted to be part of the movement of fashion creatives who are not only centred in who they are by the stories they are telling but want to leave a legacy to those to follow

But how do you do this effectively and profitably as an African fashion designer? Thebe Magugu, Ituen Basi do this well. But how do YOU tell an African Narrative that is positive, global and also profitable? Let me share a few tips.

Tip 1
QUALITY MANUFACTURING

I can't emphasize enough how essential Quality manufacturing
is if you want to be deemed a luxury brand

Tip 2
UNiQUE CULTURAL REFERENCES

Using cultural references that are relatable in print, embellishment, use of colour, music, food, things that we take for granted and yet are around us all the time. The clay pot in my image conjures up so many childhood memories, my grandmother used to store mageu in hers for the children in the household to drink as a snack. The shape could be translated into a bubble skirt shape and the patterns on the outside could be translated into a print design.

Tip 3
QUALITY FABRICS

Lux brands are only associated with good quality fabrics like natural fabrics like silk cashmere yarns for knitwear

Tip 4
A BUYING AUDIENCE

An audience and a community that can relate to your story is most likely going to become a buying audience if handled with care.

I hope this helps you to find your voice as an African fashion designer.

ARE YOU READY?

It's trade show season in January and February, fabric sourcing and sales trade shows. For those of you who just showcased at AFI, SA Fashion week, Lagos fashion weeks and Senegal fashion week. This ought to be your next step to access markets. How prepared are you?

It takes more than just making sure that you have your samples, lookbooks and linesheets. I want you to make the most of these opportunities to grow your businesses so, please allow me to share my tips with you.

Tip 1
Brand your Space professionally, so that potential buyers and media can take you seriously

Tip 2
Make sure your devices are fully charged so you can share the event on social media in real-time to keep your audience engaged

Tip 3
Be present and engage with the tradeshow attendees by introducing yourself and being welcoming, remember in that instance YOU are your brand

Tip 4
Be available for opportunities that provide extra promotion for your brand after the event

Tip 5
In my experience most sales take place after the show, so follow up with a prepared email script if you don't hear from them after your 1st and 2nd try.

I hope you found these tips helpful?

GRATITUDE

Do you ever have those moments where you just wake up and think "is this real life?" In a good kind of way of course.

Today was one of those mornings and I really made a point to stop and reflect, because, the privilege to take fashion designers out on tour, for them to see what is possible for thier businesses is always inspiring...And I'm one of those people who give thanks for everything, parking spaces included..but It's always amazing what a moment of gratitude can do especially when my next move is to get back into the work that makes it all possible.

Drop me a note below and Tell me what you are grateful for today

Let me introduce myself

I haven't introduced myself on here for a while, so I thought I'd do it again.

A big warm hello to all of you!

My name is Lorato and I'm the driving force behind Lorato Liphuko and Associates Pty ltd. When I was 11 I fell on love with fashion after coming across an article in Essence magazine on the African American designer Byron Lars. In 2021 after many trials and errors I decided to go for it and my African Luxury Fashion Business Coaching Consultancy was born. I spend most of my time coaching, consulting, writing course content and organising fashion business events and I love every minute of it!

For me what I do is much more than a job or a business, it's something that I picture myself doing for years to come because of the why. It helps me to make a small but significant contribution to the eradication of unemployment in the fashion manufacturing industry on my colourful African continent and I honestly couldn't imagine doing anything else.

I am also privileged to be a mother to a lively little boy, sister to a younger brother who thinks he's older because he looks it, daughter to my friend and mentor father, obsessed with reading business biographies, watching Nollywood movies...yup... and spending time with my family in my free time.

I'd love to get to know you a little better, comment below 👇 and say hello and tell me where you are from.
