Guiding the Conversation | Mr Newton Jazire

Insurance doesn't stand still and neither do we.

At the 2026 IIB Winter School last week, President of the Insurance Institute of Botswana and BIC Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Newton Jazire, guided the conversation on the theme Thriving through Disruption: Building a Future-ready Insurance Market, bringing together industry leaders, professionals, and colleagues from the Insurance Institute of Botswana and the Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe for two days of purposeful learning and honest dialogue.

Mr Jazire challenged the industry to move beyond simply reacting to change, noting that true readiness means anticipating risk, investing in capability, embracing innovation, and staying relentlessly focused on the customers and communities the industry exists to serve.

He also highlighted the collaboration between the two institutes as a reflection of a broader regional commitment strengthening insurance education, deepening knowledge exchange, and building a resilient, competitive insurance sector across Botswana and Zimbabwe.

"Readiness means more than reacting to change. It means anticipating risk, investing in capability, embracing innovation, and staying relentlessly focused on the customers and communities we serve."

In the closing session on Building a Future-Ready Insurance Profession: Collaboration & Skills for Tomorrow, Isaac Zinhanga highlighted the importance of collaboration in shaping a stronger, more resilient insurance industry. He emphasized that the future of the profession depends on partnerships that foster shared learning, innovation, and the development of skills across the region.

Drawing on successful regional models, he demonstrated how collaboration through joint CPD programmes, examiner and faculty exchanges, mutual recognition of qualifications, collaborative research, and regional training initiatives can strengthen professional capacity and elevate industry standards.

His message was clear: no institute builds the future alone. By embracing collaboration, investing in people, and sharing knowledge across borders, the insurance profession can develop the leadership, expertise, and resilience needed to meet tomorrow’s challenges.

“Capacity built once and shared will always outperform capacity built twice, slowly, in isolation.”

Executive Director | Kingsway

In an insightful session, Thapelo Borekilwe highlighted the critical role of risk management, compliance, and corporate governance in building resilient and trusted businesses. He emphasized that compliance should not be viewed as a regulatory obligation alone, but as a strategic business function that strengthens stakeholder confidence, improves operational resilience, and creates a sustainable competitive advantage.

He underscored the importance of leveraging customer complaints as valuable market intelligence, embracing self-regulation, safeguarding customer data, strengthening anti-money laundering frameworks, and preparing for evolving cybersecurity threats. He also challenged organizations to move beyond reactive compliance and become strategic, integrated, and risk-based, with strong leadership, data governance, innovation, market trust, and regulatory intelligence at the core of decision-making.

His message reinforced that effective governance protects not only against sanctions and cyber risks but also strengthens customer confidence, organizational reputation, and long-term business sustainability.

Trust is built through accountability, resilience, and a commitment to doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

Human Capital Strategist & Entrepreneur | Ether Institute

In a thought-provoking session on Professional Etiquette, Customer Service & Personal Branding, Letsha Kgotla emphasized that in today’s economy, trust is the greatest competitive advantage. She challenged professionals to move beyond simply selling products and instead focus on building lasting customer relationships through honesty, transparency, empathy, and consistent service.

Her key message was clear: Insurance may be purchased with logic, but it is retained through experience. Every customer interaction either strengthens or weakens confidence, making professionalism, integrity, reliability, and customer-centric service essential for long-term success.

As she concluded, future-ready professionals are those who become known for integrity, knowledge, empathy, reliability, professionalism, and consistency qualities that build trust and elevate both personal and organizational brands.
