The Gaborone City Council has issued a public reminder urging residents to comply with its dog management regulations under the 2018 by-laws.

According to the notice, all dog owners must ensure their pets are properly licensed. Fees include P50 for ordinary dogs, P100 for breeding dogs, P600 for guard dogs, and P100 for special-purpose dogs. Additional dogs attract a fee of P25, while duplicate licences cost P75.

Residents are also reminded that:

1. A household may keep a maximum of two dogs.
2. Dogs must be kept under control at all times.
3. Owners must provide proper shelter, food, and care.
4. Dogs should not become a nuisance or pose danger to people or property.
5. Premises must display a visible warning sign such as “Beware of the Dog.”

The council warns that stray dogs will be impounded, and failure to comply with the by-laws could result in fines of up to P2,000 or imprisonment.

Authorities are encouraging the public to take responsibility and ensure compliance to maintain safety and harmony in communities across Gaborone.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced that, starting April 13 at 10 a.m. ET, it will enforce a naval blockade on all ships traveling to or from Iranian ports, following a directive from the President.

The operation will apply to vessels of every nation accessing Iranian ports along the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. However, ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz to reach non-Iranian destinations will not be affected.

Further guidance will be shared with commercial shipping through official maritime notices. Mariners are encouraged to stay updated via navigation alerts and communicate with U.S. naval forces on channel 16 while operating in nearby waters.

More than 8,000 employees in the public service are currently working under temporary contracts, raising growing concern over job security and fair treatment.

Speaking in Parliament, Minister for State President, Defense, and Security, Moeti Mohwasa acknowledged that the widespread use of temporary employment is a serious issue. He warned that, in some cases, it can open the door to worker exploitation.

The minister revealed that the government is already conducting a study aimed at reducing the high number of temporary workers. He also said that the problem will be fixed by the upcoming Public Service Bill, which is likely to be presented to Parliament soon.

The Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) has clarified that there will be no immediate change in fuel pump prices, despite the suspension of certain fuel levies.

The suspension is intended to prevent price increases, not reduce current prices, as global fuel costs remain high. While prices could have increased, the government’s intervention is helping to cushion consumers for now.

BERA will continue monitoring the situation and may adjust prices in the future if necessary.

U.S. Makes Tentative Ceasefire Deal with Iran

The United States and Iran have agreed to a temporary ceasefire, easing tensions after weeks of escalating threats that brought the two nations close to war.

The deal, expected to last about two weeks, aims to create space for negotiations while preventing further military action. A key part of the agreement includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil supply.

World leaders have welcomed the move as a step away from conflict, but many warn the truce is fragile and could collapse if talks fail.

For now, the ceasefire offers a brief moment of relief—but whether it leads to lasting peace remains uncertain.

The Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) has announced a temporary suspension of some fuel levies starting today (8 April 2026), aimed at easing the rising cost of fuel.

The government has removed key charges (fuel levy, national petroleum fund levy, and security of supply margin) for 6 months, reducing the overall price pressure on petrol and diesel.

💡 So what does this announcement mean for an ordinary Motswana?

1. Slightly cheaper fuel at the pump
2. Possible relief on transport fares (though not always immediate)
3. Lower cost of goods over time, as transport becomes cheaper
4. A bit more breathing room in your monthly budget

The suspended levies amount to:

239.5 thebe per litre (diesel)
244.5 thebe per litre (petrol)
This move is meant to soften the impact of rising fuel costs, but the full benefit will depend on how businesses and transport operators respond.

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark ultimatum to Iran, warning that the country could be “taken out in one night” if it fails to meet a Tuesday deadline to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz.

The deadline marks a critical moment in an already volatile conflict. The strait, a key global oil route, has been partially blocked amid ongoing hostilities, raising fears of economic disruption and wider war.

Trump has threatened massive military strikes targeting Iranian infrastructure if Tehran does not comply. While he suggested such action could happen quickly, he also indicated a preference to avoid escalation if a deal is reached.

Iran, however, has resisted the demands, pushing instead for broader negotiations to end the conflict. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, but no agreement has been secured as the deadline approaches.

The situation has already shaken global markets, with oil prices rising and investors remaining cautious amid uncertainty. Analysts warn that any military action could have severe consequences for both regional stability and the global economy.

As the clock ticks down, the world watches closely—uncertain whether the standoff will end in diplomacy or a dramatic escalation.

Tensions are rising between members of the public and transport operators following recent developments in Botswana’s public transport sector. This comes after the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure released a joint communiqué addressing ongoing negotiations with transport associations.

According to the statement issued by the Ministry, discussions between the government and various transport bodies—including bus and taxi associations—are continuing in good faith. Both sides have expressed commitment to reaching solutions that serve commuters, operators, and the broader transport industry.

However, on the ground, the situation appears more complicated.

Many commuters have raised concerns that some transport operators are allegedly forcing passengers to pay the original fares that were initially published by the Ministry—despite those prices having been officially revised downward. This has led to frustration and confusion among the public, with some feeling exploited and uncertain about what the correct fares should be.

The communiqué emphasizes that negotiations are still ongoing and have been characterized by mutual respect and a shared goal of improving service delivery and sustainability in the sector. It also reassures the public that the atmosphere remains positive and collaborative.

Still, the gap between policy and practice is fueling dissatisfaction. Commuters are calling for clearer enforcement of the revised fares and stronger oversight to ensure compliance by all operators.

In the statement, Noah Salakae and representatives of transport operators urged the public to remain patient as discussions continue, expressing hope that the final outcomes will benefit both passengers and service providers.

For now, many commuters are left asking: if fares have been revised, why are some still being charged more?
