One of the secrets of the Ju/’hoansi San: the power of community.

A path to collective cuccess

The Ju/'hoansi San are an indigenous people of Southern Africa, primarily found in Namibia and Botswana. They are known for their deep connection to nature, egalitarian social structures, and rich cultural heritage. One essential secret from their way of life that can be particularly valuable for modern life is their emphasis on community and social cohesion.

The increasing trend of people in the west living alone and feeling disconnected from their communities is a significant issue in modern society.

This trend also has its downsides. Prolonged periods of solitude can lead to feelings of loneliness and social isolation, which can negatively impact mental health. Living alone often means a lack of immediate emotional and practical support, which can be challenging during times of need or crisis.

From a societal perspective, the rise in loneliness and isolation can contribute to a public health crisis, as it is linked to various mental and physical health issues. The decline in community engagement weakens social cohesion, leading to a less supportive and interconnected society.

In today's fast-paced world, the importance of a strong community cannot be overstated. Communities offer a wealth of benefits that contribute to the well-being and success of their members. A network of caring individuals provides emotional support, helping us navigate life's challenges.

Being part of something greater boosts our self-esteem and sense of identity. Communities pool knowledge, skills, and resources, empowering everyone. Working together on projects leads to remarkable achievements and shared success.

Communities also offer a safety net, ensuring mutual protection and support. Together, we can tackle local issues and enhance our quality of life. Supporting local businesses creates jobs and fosters economic stability. Networking within the community opens doors to new opportunities and growth.

Cultural preservation within communities enriches our lives by maintaining traditions and heritage. Sharing knowledge and experiences leads to personal and collective development. Social interactions within a community promote healthier lifestyles and provide support, reducing isolation and enhancing mental well-being.

Communities encourage active participation and contribution, empowering us to influence positive change. United communities better withstand and recover from crises, and diverse skills and knowledge help us adapt to changes and challenges.

By fostering a strong community, we create a supportive environment where everyone can thrive. Let's come together, share our strengths, and build a future of collective success and empowerment.

This is where we live...

Living in the land of the San has been a transformative journey, one that reshaped our understanding of life, resilience, and happiness. It isn’t always convenient or easy, but this place, steeped in ancient traditions and vibrant culture, has become our home—a decision we have never regretted.

Imagine waking up to the golden hues of dawn, the sound of birds singing, and the whisper of the wind through the tall grasses. This is our daily reality, always surrounded by nature, yet still connected to the broader world when we choose to be. But the true heart of this land belongs to the San people.

Our paths cross frequently, drawn together by mutual curiosity. Despite the language barrier, we communicate through translators, gestures, and shared laughter. Their language, one of many, is a beautiful symphony of sounds that we can only partly understand. Often, they talk about us and burst into laughter, and we find ourselves laughing with them, their joy so genuine and infectious that understanding seems secondary.

They ask us about our life here, where we come from, and what life was like in our previous home. We tell them stories of our past, and they listen with wide-eyed wonder, finding it hard to imagine such a different way of living. And in return, they share their stories, their ways of life, which seem equally unfathomable to us. Yet, in these exchanges, we find common ground, a shared humanity.

What astonishes us most is their resilience. The San have endured incredible hardships—being chased from their ancestral lands, treated unjustly, and marginalized. Yet, when we look at them, we see a happiness that eludes many people in the modern world. Their contentment, their deep connection to the land, and their unyielding spirit are profound lessons in what it means to live a fulfilling life.

We have learned so much from the San people—about living in harmony with nature, about strength and perseverance, and about finding joy in simplicity. They have shown us that happiness isn’t about material wealth or comfort, but about connection, community, and a sense of belonging.

We wish for everyone to have the opportunity to experience what we have found here. To meet the San, to laugh with them, to learn from them, and to discover how their way of life can add a new dimension to your own happiness. It’s a journey that can transform your perspective and enrich your life in ways you never imagined.

You can explore more about the history and culture of the San people here: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_people).

There are still a few seats available for August 2024! Send a pm when you are interested in having this beautiful and life changing experience.
Dates in 2025 will be communicated soon. Stay tuned!

🌟 Exciting News from Tsutsubega! 🌟

For the past 5.5 years, I've been living in the wonderful community of Tsutsubega. While driving to Maun, I often saw mentally disabled children living at the cattle posts. Sadly, many parents and siblings didn’t know how to engage with these children. Determined to make a difference, I reached out to my friend Sandra from Dutch Down Support Foundation, and together we launched a heartwarming project in Tsutsubega.

We began by focusing on three special needs children and their families. With educational packages created in the Netherlands and brought over by friends, our amazing facilitators, Nami and Gladys, started playing with the children weekly. The transformation was incredible! The kids began to develop new skills, discovered their talents, and expressed themselves more confidently. Parents noticed these positive changes and started engaging with their children in new ways. One parent even bought a toy for their child for the first time, recognizing their child's worth and potential.

Today, we hosted a special event at our Phazama-farm. Parents and a sister of the three children participated in an online workshop led by Sandra and Juliette of Dutch Down Support. The event was a hit, with VDC members, the chief, and even the area councilor attending and loving it. The workshop covered important topics like daily routines, adolescence, and learning through play. It was interactive and engaging.

As Leadership2Impact-Academy, we are thrilled to support this project voluntarily together with Re Jala Peo and StartUp4Kids Botswana. We believe in the strength of togetherness, learning from one another, and making a real impact. Nami and Gladys will continue their visits, and we have more workshops planned. Our next big step? Setting up a playgroup in Tsutsubega to provide a safe learning space for young children and mentally disabled children in our community.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this incredible journey! 🌈✨

Thank you Moanamisi Annie Masedi and Gladys for your great work!

Tracker Skills in Modern Times: Valuable Lessons from the Past

In the days of the gatherer-hunters, tracking skills were essential. Knowing where to find food, which animals were safe to hunt, and which plants were edible were crucial for survival. Living in a country where safaris are a daily occurrence, these skills are still prevalent among local communities. I remember when Katja's phone was stolen from her car. The neighbors managed to track down the thief by following his footprints. Recently, there was a break-in by outsiders, and they were apprehended through tracking. It's safe to say they won't be attempting that again.

But are these tracker skills still useful in the modern world? Surprisingly, ancient tracking skills can be incredibly valuable in a business context, often emphasizing observation, analysis, and strategic thinking. Here are some applications:

Attention to Detail
Tracking requires meticulous attention to detail. In business, this translates to careful analysis of market trends, customer feedback, and competitor actions, allowing for more informed decision-making.

Pattern Recognition
Trackers identify patterns in nature to follow animals. Similarly, recognizing patterns in consumer behavior, sales data, and market trends can help businesses predict future movements and stay ahead of the competition.

Problem-Solving
Tracking often involves solving complex problems with limited information. This skill is directly applicable to business challenges where innovative solutions are needed to navigate uncertainties.

Strategic Thinking
Trackers think several steps ahead, anticipating an animal’s movements. Similarly, strategic planning in business involves anticipating market changes and preparing for future opportunities and challenges.

Networking and Relationships
Just as trackers often work in teams and rely on collective knowledge, business professionals’ benefit from building strong networks and collaborative relationships to share insights and strategies.

Environmental Awareness
Trackers have a deep understanding of their environment. Businesses can benefit from a similar awareness by adopting sustainable practices and considering the environmental impact of their operations, which is increasingly important to consumers.
By applying these ancient skills, organisations can enhance their strategic planning, operational efficiency, and adaptability in a constantly changing business landscape. Now, you have the opportunity to see and learn firsthand from the Ju Hoansi San.

Here is why you should be aware of your own roadblock? Unlock the power of Self-Leadership

Why do you hesitate? Are you standing in your own way?

Pay close attention to your thoughts. Personal leadership is about empowerment and self-awareness. Our thoughts aren’t always helpful, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that whatever we think must be true. While it may sound amusing, this can be a harsh reality.

Being mindful and aware of your thoughts is crucial because they significantly influence your emotions, behaviors, and ultimately, your decisions.
Here is how negative or unexamined thoughts can affect decision-making:

1. Influence on behavior: Your thoughts directly impact your actions. Negative or irrational thoughts can lead to unproductive or harmful behaviors, while positive and rational thoughts foster constructive actions.

2. Impulse control: Awareness of your thoughts helps you manage impulses, leading to more deliberate and thoughtful decisions.

3. Limiting beliefs: Holding onto limiting beliefs like "This isn’t for me" or "I can’t afford this" can prevent you from pursuing opportunities or taking necessary risks, ultimately stunting personal and professional growth.

By being vigilant and reflective about your thoughts, you can improve your decision-making process, ensuring it is balanced, rational, and aligned with your true goals and values.

Consider this unique opportunity for self-leadership with the Ju/’hoansi San. What are your initial thoughts?
Is your first reaction a desire to participate, followed by a series of excuses why you can't? Check those thoughts. Are they true? What if you change your mindset to: "I am going to be there"? Your mind will start working for you, uncovering possibilities you hadn’t considered before, and amazing things will begin to happen.

Don’t let your own thoughts be the roadblock to your growth. Embrace self-leadership and seize this incredible opportunity.
