Reports say a Kansas homeowner fled an approaching wildfire after leaving lawn sprinklers running around the house. When the family returned, almost everything around the property was scorched black, but the house remained standing in a small patch of green. Local firefighters also helped protect the home by soaking the structures.

🔥 FireSmart Tip: As the Garden Winds Down, Clear it out.

Harvest season is starting, gardens are beginning to wind down, and over the next few weeks those green summer plants will start turning into dry fall debris.

As you harvest and clean up your yard, it’s a great time to sneak a little FireSmart work into the mix:

🍂 Clear as you go – Remove spent plants, dry leaves, twigs and other yard debris instead of letting it pile up around your home, deck or garden beds.

♻️ The City of Armstrong provides bi-weekly green waste collection. Each household can put out either two certified compostable bags or one container of green waste for collection. Green waste can include leaves, flowers, grass clippings, stems and roots. Small branches are also accepted, up to 12 mm (½") in diameter and 75 cm (30") long.

You’re already out there harvesting tomatoes and wondering what to do with 47 zucchinis—you might as well FireSmart while you’re at it.

Every little cleanup helps reduce wildfire risk around your home and our community.

🏘️ The first 1.5 metres around your home can make a meaningful difference. This Immediate Zone should be kept non-combustible, including the space around attached decks.

Clear vegetation and combustible material, then consider gravel, brick or concrete next to the structure.
Start small: choose one side of your home to tackle this week.

BC has ENDED the State of Provincial Emergency, effective Aug. 27, due to wildfire.There is no impact to existing States of Local Emergency, Evacuation Orders or Evacuation Alerts.

While the State of Provincial Emergency is ending, wildfire season is not over.

The province will continue to respond to the wildfire situation and support impacted communities.

Residents and visitors in B.C. are urged to:

• Check conditions before travelling and follow directions from officials.
