Alta Management Tip of the Day:

Are you having trouble getting cows pregnant, even when using high fertility sires? Chances are, it could be a semen handling issue. Here are a few simple things consider:
• Make sure the thaw bath is clean, the correct temperature, and don’t put too many straws in at once.
• Always keep the straw cutters clean.
• Use a timer when going through the insemination process.
• Breed at the right time of day – away from the hottest part of the day.
• Group cows appropriately to make breeding easier and more efficient.

Our International Year of the Woman Farmer series continues with another SPOTLIGHT!

Today, we are shining the spotlight on Melissa Thibaudier from Pickmick Farms in Delta, BC, Canada. Melissa wears many hats, such as mother of 2, licensed veterinary technician, as well as co-owner and manager of Pickmick Farms.

Melissa manages 900 head of dairy cattle, including 450 milking cows, while also overseeing treatments, breeding, pregnancy diagnosis, and ultrasound work – including lung ultrasounds on calves. Her incredibly strong work ethic is what enables her to balance raising a family alongside her husband, while still providing exceptional care for her herd. She also takes time out of her busy schedule to mentor young female vet tech students, training and encouraging the next generation of women in agriculture.

Melissa’s leadership goes beyond her own farm. When flooding impacted a nearby dairy, she welcomed cows from their operation and cared for them as if they were her own.

Committed to continuous learning, Melissa received her ultrasounding license several years ago, attended an Alta Dairy Manager School, and most recently completed the November 2025 AltaU session. Additionally, last year Melisssa was awarded Bronze in the Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council Repro Awards for her excellence in dairy reproduction management!

Investing in the future of the dairy industry starts with education and hands-on experience.

Thank you to the Central Manitoba Holstein Club and Halarda Dairy Farm for hosting a successful A.I. Clinic led by Alta advisors Jeff West and Mike Smith. With nine students participating, it was a great opportunity to share knowledge, build skills and connect with future industry leaders.
