Honoured to join National Indigenous Knowledge and Language Alliance NIKLA ANCLA at their AGM today and present our governance review. Throughout this spring, we've had such thoughtful conversations with Council members Janis Bomberry, Stacy Allison-Cassin, PhD, Anne Carr-Wiggin, Elaine MacInnis, and Council Chair Camille Callison, as we reviewed bylaws, governance structures, policies, and next steps together. NIKLA's core values of Indigenous leadership, relationships, professional expertise, and respect grounded in cultural protocols shaped our report's focus on clarity, accountability, and sustainability.

The path you are carving will make a difference across generations.

Honouring the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

35 years ago, 14 women at L'École Polytechnique in Montreal were murdered and 13 others were injured in a senseless act of violence. There is for gender-based violence, not at home, not at the workplace, not at school, not in public, not online. Nowhere.

HONOURING THE NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization honours the 14 women who were killed at Polytechnique Montréal on this day in 1989.

We solemnly remember their names: Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte, and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz. Violent misogyny drove the tragic killings of these 14 women.

First Nation women, girls, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people continue to face violence in their lives. We mourn the loss of those who have been stolen from us.

Women are sacred and deserve to be safe and protected. SCO reaffirms our commitment to stand up and take action to end gender-based violence.

NEW SCHOOL COMING TO O-CHI-CHAK-KO-SIPI

SCO is delighted to learn the federal government is proceeding with plans to fund the building of a new Kindergarten to Grade 12 school in the O-Chi-Chak-Ko-Sipi First Nation.

We would like to congratulate Chief Kerwin Chaboyer and the leadership at the current Donald Ahmo School on this amazing news.

Indigenous Services Canada also revealed today funds for improvements to schools in Norway House Cree Nation, investments to design a new elementary and secondary schools in Tataskweyak Cree Nation, and funding to carry out feasibility studies and designs for new schools in O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation and Garden Hill First Nation.

SCO believes access to proper education is a basic a human right. We are pleased to see our federal treaty partner make these commitments to help close the education gap for First Nation students that was created by colonial systems.

Yesterday, a beloved Indigenous leader and Elder, Mizana Giizhik, His Honour Murray Sinclair walked on at age 73. He was surrounded by family and love.

A lawyer, judge, Commissioner, Senator, University Chancellor and passionate advocate, Murray Sinclair worked to create a better world for Indigenous people and all those who now live in Canada. He leaves behind a powerful legacy including the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry and Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and its 94 Calls to Action.

Justice Sinclair's work ensured that generations of Indigenous children and their families harmed by residential school systems would be recognized and remembered. And, with grace and strength, he carried with him the weight of thousands of their stories of loss and despair.

Murray raised us up to believe that justice, change, and decency are possible

He was a beloved father and grandfather, husband, friend and colleague. Our deepest heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, and the many who will mourn his loss.

We wish him a safe journey to the ancestors.

Spent time this week with CIRNAC's archivists - unsung heroes who manage irreplaceable historical records with both expertise and wit. Their work ethic and dedication make all the difference for research supporting Indigenous Nations on land claims and other matters.

Thank you, Manon and Charle! 🌟
