When shear tips don’t meet properly, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Sometimes a small bumper adjustment is all that’s needed, while other times the correct repair involves carefully bending the shear to restore proper alignment.

This is a highly controlled repair that requires the right knowledge, tools, and experience. It should never be attempted on every pair of shears, as using the wrong technique can permanently damage them. Every shear is evaluated individually to determine the safest and most effective repair.

⚠️ Just because your shears are sharp doesn’t mean they’ll cut properly.

One of the most important parts of shear sharpening happens after the sharpening is complete… proper reassembly and tension adjustment.

These texturizers came in with very loose tension. At first glance, it looked like the clicker plate was missing, but once I disassembled the shears I discovered it had actually been installed upside down, which meant the tension system couldn’t work correctly.

Why does this matter?

✂️ Too loose: the shears can fold or push hair instead of cutting it cleanly.

✂️ Too tight: the blades create excessive pressure and friction, which can push hair, feel harsh to use, and even lead to premature blade wear or dulling.

A sharp edge is only part of the equation. Proper alignment, correct reassembly, and accurate tension adjustment are just as important for a smooth, effortless cut.

If your shears are pulling, folding hair, or just don’t feel right, it may not be the edge alone—it could be the tension system.
