Bent RUSK Hair Shears — Can They Be Fixed? ✂️

These RUSK professional hair shears came to me needing more than just a sharpening. The handle had been bent, affecting how the shear lined up and operated.

In this video, I work through the repair, get the shear back into proper alignment, and then give the blades a complete professional sharpening. It’s a good example of why sharpening hair shears involves a lot more than simply putting a new edge on them.

A damaged shear doesn’t always mean it’s time for a replacement!

This Cutco knife was WAY past dull… 😳🔪

The blade had been worn down and the original serrations were gone. The client asked me to put new regular serrations back into it.

So I went to work… 🔥

This old butcher knife just needed a little love! 🔪

Not rusty. Not destroyed. Just a very long, well-used knife with plenty of scratches and wear that was ready for a proper cleanup and regrind.

I put it on the belt grinder and gave this old butcher knife a fresh edge and a new lease on life. There’s something pretty satisfying about taking an old, well-used tool and bringing it back to working condition!

Big Damage, Fresh Edge 🔪

This kitchen knife came in with some serious nicks along the edge—it looked like someone had been hitting metal against the blade.

I used my 1x30 machines to carefully remove all the damage, re-establish the edge, and apex it properly. Once the edge was finished, I stopped and tested the knife to make sure it was cutting the way it should.

Damage like this doesn’t always mean the knife is finished. With the right process, you can bring the edge back and get it working again. 🔪

When shear tips don’t meet properly, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Sometimes a small bumper adjustment is all that’s needed, while other times the correct repair involves carefully bending the shear to restore proper alignment.

This is a highly controlled repair that requires the right knowledge, tools, and experience. It should never be attempted on every pair of shears, as using the wrong technique can permanently damage them. Every shear is evaluated individually to determine the safest and most effective repair.

⚠️ Just because your shears are sharp doesn’t mean they’ll cut properly.

One of the most important parts of shear sharpening happens after the sharpening is complete… proper reassembly and tension adjustment.

These texturizers came in with very loose tension. At first glance, it looked like the clicker plate was missing, but once I disassembled the shears I discovered it had actually been installed upside down, which meant the tension system couldn’t work correctly.

Why does this matter?

✂️ Too loose: the shears can fold or push hair instead of cutting it cleanly.

✂️ Too tight: the blades create excessive pressure and friction, which can push hair, feel harsh to use, and even lead to premature blade wear or dulling.

A sharp edge is only part of the equation. Proper alignment, correct reassembly, and accurate tension adjustment are just as important for a smooth, effortless cut.

If your shears are pulling, folding hair, or just don’t feel right, it may not be the edge alone—it could be the tension system.
