When we brought this little lady home in 2019, I can't say her future education was the first thing on our minds 😂 However, it feels like we blinked and she's already 7 and headed to Grade 2.

My mom had always told me that she always just put away her Child Tax Benefit right away for my education when I was little. She reinforced the idea that small contributions add up and that lots of time to grow in the market was helpful. So, as soon as that benefit came for us, we set up and automatic payment for it to me moved to her RESP.

We were lucky to be able to balance our monthly budget without the benefit and were able to start saving it for her. I know this is not the case for everyone, and it isn't always going to work to use it for contributions.

However, the idea is to start early, choose an amount that works for you, and adjust when you need. The Government will contribute $500/year for every $2500/year that you contribute (roughly $209/monthly will get you there).

Some families do less, some do more and some start later and are able to catch up on grants at that time. If saving for your little one is important to you, we can find a way to start.🩵

You did the thing - you opened the RESP (or RRSP or TFSA)! ✅

You started putting money into it every two weeks. ✅

Next, make sure that the money you are putting in is working for you for the time you have allotted for it to work. I've met a number of young families that opened RESPs for their kiddos that never realized the money they were putting in was going into a savings account and earning very little interest, even though they had planned for it to sit there for 17+ years!

A registration (TFSA, RESP, RRSP) is like a bucket. You can put different products into that bucket like savings accounts, GICs, or mutual funds to name a few. Or a combination of those products!

Your Financial Advisor will help you select what's best based on your timeline, risk tolerance, risk capacity, and goals.

You opened the account and now it's time to make sure that account is working for you and is on track to what you need it to be! 🙌

I hear way too people many putting themselves and their financial decisions down just because they carry debt or have splurged on something important to them.
