Ontario–based J.B. Forest Products owner Bill Breckenridge, alongside his sons James and John, recently visited the factory to see their new Tigercat 822E nearing completion. Joined by Wajax, their local Tigercat‑TCi dealer, the family got an up-close look at the machine in its final stages of assembly. We caught up with them during their visit to hear their firsthand impressions of the experience and their new machine.

The Tigercat 6040 carbonizer reduces onsite wood debris by up to 90%, converting it into high-value biochar with added revenue potential. It processes 15–20 tons per hour with no preprocessing, while sequestering up to 30% of the available carbon.

The consistent, high-grade biochar delivers both agricultural and industrial value — absorbing heavy metals and contaminants, reducing soil acidity, and promoting microbial activity. Its porous structure enables nutrient charging for slow release, improving soil quality and moisture retention. Biochar also enhances compost and serves as an effective medium for water filtration.

Shawn MacPhee, owner of Shawn MacPhee Enterprises in Nova Scotia, has built a flexible and cost‑efficient harvesting operation centered on Tigercat’s 845 platform. He values the 845 series for its ideal size, low operating costs, fuel efficiency, and durability — especially for small‑diameter timber he normally encounters on private forestland in Nova Scotia. His fleet includes multiple H845 series harvesters, including a 42,000 hour H845B, an 845E feller buncher, and the new Tigercat 1055D forwarder. Shawn can process behind the feller buncher or run smaller, two-machine cut-to-length crews. Shawn’s son Nathan operates the 1055D. He cites many advantages including improved service access, and a quieter, more ergonomic cab with clear sightlines in all directions.

The film includes Earth Foundries and Falk Forestry’s work in a fire-damaged forest, where Tigercat 6040 carbonizers convert low-value woody debris from fuel reduction operations into biochar, which is then applied on site to help improve soil conditions for reforestation. This demonstrates how partnerships and practical solutions are turning today’s forest management challenges into opportunities for healthier forests and more resilient communities.
