A Mentor or Strategic Advisor could be the piece missing in your business or project to take things to the next level. Here's a few points on why the right mentor or strategic advisor is valuable.

First off, they look at the business or project as a whole from an objective point of view. They aren't just there to pat your back and say "good job". The right mentor or strategic advisor is there to look at things from the outside, analyse what works or what doesn't, and give you ideas on how you can make the shifts you need to take the next step.

They're going to ask the tough questions that others may be afraid to ask because of their position in the business. If they see something that's holding you back, they should be asking you why you chose that direction and offer suggestions of other ways things could be handled. The right mentor or strategic advisor is there to help you make the tough decisions you need to move forward.

They're going to help you think outside the box and try some things you haven't tried before. It might be looking at ways to better use your people so you can spend time concentrating on steering the ship. It might be taking an old idea and repackaging it to bring forward something new. Your mentor or strategic advisor should ask the "did you think of..." or "have you tried...." questions to bring about that out of the box thinking.

Lastly, they're going to share their previous experiences and resources they've gathered from their business journey that will help you save time and avoid costly mistakes. While failing fast and often will get you there, it's the longer path to take. Learning from other's mistakes speeds up the process while saving time and money from having to make those mistakes yourself.

When you conquer your fears, there's nothing that can stop your idea or business from growing big. Just like firefighters, businesses need to push past their fears to make it to the next level.

This picture was taken from one of my firefighter training courses. Instead of just being a participant, I stepped up and took the line captain position for this exercise.

It was my first time being line captain. I'd watched others do it. I was confident I could make it happen. I ran to the front and put any fears aside.

Now if I told you there was a open valve propane fire in front of that line that could burn you any minute if a mistake was made, would you jump in and take the lead?

I've learned that if I can run towards the fire in a fire scene, I can accomplish anything in business. At times it will feel like running toward the fire. I know I can do it.

You can too. All it takes is the right mindset and belief. Face your fears and conquer them. Believe you can build anything you put your mind to. It will change your business forever.

Some people have asked "Shawn, why have you chosen to focus on the business side of things instead of staying in technology? You're so good at building great tech!"

It's true. I've done a lot of great things in the technology space over the years. Some examples:

-developed in over 15 different programming languages
-pioneereed Voice over IP in Canada
-put one of the first touchscreen PCs in -40C weather conditions
-co-founded a publicly traded technology company
-built large scale computer networks, servers and cloud systems
-created software solutions used around the world

I haven't turned my back on the technology sector. I'm still an active part of several technology projects. It's the journey I've taken through the tech sector that led me to discover what truly gets me excited....innovation, disrupting the market and scalable business.

I've chosen to focus my efforts on the strategic side helping others scale bring their innovation to the world. I help people architect the next big idea to disrupt the market. I show others how out of the box thinking can take an old idea and make it new again.

Technology is so ingrained in business today that any business can benefit from well implemented technology solutions that help them disrupt their market. As I've shared before, we've also used these strategies to introduce and scale energy sector innovations. There truly is no limit to how these strategies can be applied.

The number one word, hated by programmers and innovators all over the world SALES.

Now that could be contrary to business belief, but I'll tell you why it's the number one hated word.

Technology people, engineers, a lot of innovator...they just want to focus on building their product and bringing their idea to the world.

If you're an innovator or someone trying to start up a company and you don't have strong sales, How are you going to raise the money you need? How are you going to get the sales you need to get to that next level?

You don't have to do it yourself. This is where you can get help, Find yourself someone who's good at sales. Find someone out there that actually has the knowledge and like enjoys doing those things that you don't like doing. It's really critical especially when you're in that early stage to start talking to people. Find out who it is that can get you out in that Marketplace.

My team, and I, we work with some partners that help get innovations out in the oil and gas industry right now... and we're showing people that, hey, we're the right team, you can get your innovation to market. and then some.

Often when we measure our success, we don't often look at what we do behind us and the leaders we create.

In this video I share an example of how a previous success wasn't the sales team I helped create. The success was finding out later on how many of those team members went on to become sales leaders for other people.

A wise person told me once that it's easy to find people to lead, but hard to find people who create leaders. Help someone you know become an effective leader. Not only will it benefit others, but could benefit you one day as well.
