If your baby wakes at 5am, here’s the rule of thumb:

If they’re NOT upset:

Leave them.
Let them chill, roll around, talk to themselves, look at the ceiling - whatever they’re doing.
As long as they’re calm, you don’t need to intervene.
You’re simply holding the message: “It’s still night. We don’t start the day yet.”

If they ARE upset:

You still don’t start the day - but you DO respond.
Go in quietly, keep the room dark, and keep everything low-key.

Sit with them, pat them, shush them, rub their back… whatever calms your child.

Comfort is always okay, stimulation is not.
No lights, no chatter, no playtime, no taking them out to start the morning.

The goal isn’t to ignore them.

The goal is to support them without turning 5am into “morning.”

With consistency, their internal clock starts to shift and mornings start happening at a humane hour again. ✨

Sometimes we just wish for a bit more sleep. 😅

5am and you’re already in the kitchen making breakfast… Short naps where you just put the baby down, take a bite of food, and they’re already crying and bedtime that feels like it will never end… I think we’ve all been there.

Here’s what helps:

✅ Keep wake windows and bedtime age-appropriate. Start the day with the shortest wake window and increase them consistently throughout the day.
✅ Whatever you do, please do not start the day at 5am - keep the room dark and quiet…and play dead.
✅ Notice any sleep crutches (rocking, feeding to sleep, etc) and slowly, slowly minimize them. Replace more intense crutches with gentler ones (for example, if you’re bouncing aggressively, work toward just swaying a little)
✅ Watch for teething, regressions, or nap changes as they can temporarily throw things off, but remember, these phases don’t last forever.

It can feel impossible, but little adjustments really do make a difference.
