What does a peanut butter & jam sandwich have to do with fundraising? More than you think.

Recently, the dynamic duo of Deborah Barton and Jason Muscant from Global Philanthropic had the pleasure of leading an interactive workshop with the team at Hutton House focused on messaging, elevator pitches, and communicating impact clearly.

Our icebreaker? A deceptively simple exercise: instruct the consultant how to make a PB&J sandwich.

The lesson quickly became clear: what feels obvious in our heads is not always clear in our communication. Assumptions, jargon, and skipped steps can leave audiences confused — whether you’re explaining lunch, your mission, or why someone should care.

Strong fundraising starts with strong messaging.

Whether it’s an elevator pitch, case for support, donor messaging, or a fund development plan, clarity matters. If people can’t quickly understand who you are, why your work matters, and how they can help, connection gets lost.
