World Cup fever has reached the SmartShield team.

And what started as a jokey chat between our design and foam production department quickly turned into a challenge.

Could we make a soccer ball from foam?

You know us - we can never resist a challenge!

As you can see from the video, our team used black and blue Zote foam to create a soccer ball in SmartShield’s signature colours (SmartShield United?)

We think it’s turned out pretty well, what do you think?

Meanwhile, we’re excited about Canada’s progress in the tournament - our first point in men’s FIFA World Cup history last Friday, and all to play for tomorrow (June 18) against Qatar. We’ve got this!

Who’s your money on to win the tournament?⚽

You asked. We answered.

What is Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI)? And why are more manufacturers moving to it?

Simple answer: instead of you managing stock, we do it for you - so your packaging is monitored, planned, and replenished.

Which means no stockouts, last-minute orders or firefighting.

Reusable packaging isn’t just about sustainability anymore, it’s about making day-to-day operations run better.

In the defence industry, packaging isn’t used once and forgotten. It’s used again and again, across transport, storage, and deployment.

That’s why more teams are moving towards reusable crate systems.

Swipe through to see 6 reasons defence teams are making the switch.

When packaging looks good but doesn’t hold up in the real world, problems quickly follow.

For our client XpertVR - a leader in VR training equipment - this meant chipping foam, poor organisation, and a frustrating user experience for a system used by firefighters.

We worked with them to redesign the interior of their Nanuk 965 case, creating a robust solution to protect their new six-piece XpertFire simulations headsets.

This Sunday, 7th June 2026, marks Canadian Armed Forces Day.

We’ll be taking a moment to reflect on the brilliant and brave men and women who serve our country.

At SmartShield, we’re proud to support the defence industry and would like to say thank you for your service. 🇨🇦

Meet Abdullah, Journeyman Woodworker at SmartShield - and the man some teammates jokingly call “Mr. Perfect.”

We sat down for a chat…

❓What does a usual day at SmartShield look like?

In addition to my core woodworking duties, I assist the lead hand by helping coordinate the team, communicating upcoming projects and delegating tasks to ensure the work runs smoothly.

❓What’s your favourite part of the role?

The hands-on work of building. I take great pride in precision and quality, making sure everything is done correctly, with no errors, and that the finished product looks clean and beautiful. There is a lot of satisfaction in seeing a well-crafted piece come together the right way.

❓What three words would your teammates use to describe you?

Reliable, hardworking, and detail-oriented.

I consistently show up and get the job done, give full effort to every task, and always pay close attention to quality and precision in my work.

❓We hear your teammates have a nickname for you…

My teammates sometimes jokingly call me “Mr. Perfect.”

It comes from my commitment to doing everything the right way - no mistakes, no shortcuts! I hold myself to a high standard in my work and always aim for a clean, flawless result. It’s a bit of a running joke on the team, but honestly, I take it as a compliment.

❓What do you enjoy outside of work?

I’m very passionate about staying active and physical. My main sport is squash, which I play regularly and love. I also enjoy running. Staying fit and active is a big part of my lifestyle and helps me bring my best energy to everything I do.

❓If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

I would have two dream destinations.

The first is K2, one of the world’s most iconic and challenging mountains. I am drawn to the thrill and adventure of the trek, and the breathtaking views make it all worthwhile.

The second is Istanbul, Turkey. I have a deep appreciation for history, and Istanbul is full of it.

❓What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy week?

My favorite way to unwind is to go play a game of squash, it helps me clear my mind and release any stress from the week. After that, I love spending quality time with my family and enjoying the outdoors in nature.

❓What’s a favourite memory from your time at SmartShield?

Our company’s annual work anniversary celebration last year. We had a tug of war competition, and it was an absolute blast. It was great to see the whole team come together in a friendly and competitive spirit outside of work.

❓If you could have any superpower for a day, what would it be?

Teleportation. I would make the most of every second.

Our client ClaroNav came to us looking for a better way to package their MicronMapper - a device used in advanced dental procedures.

We created a custom solution using a Nanuk protective case and a Zote foam insert, engineered around the device itself.

• The device now sits securely at the centre of the case
• The cable is neatly routed around the outer foam
• Each component has a defined place, improving usability
• The case is custom labelled for a clean, professional finish

Working with high-precision equipment? Let’s talk.

When packaging slows your team down, it’s a problem.

Our client - a manufacturer of Level, Pressure and Density sensors - were using a “pick and pluck” foam setup in their Nanuk 938 cases.

It worked, but not well.

Their existing foam solution was time consuming, didn’t provide a precise fit, and made assembly and organisation a bit of a headache.

So we redesigned it.

We created a custom PE foam insert, engineered to hold each component securely and consistently.

The result:
✔ Faster packing and unpacking
✔ A precise fit for every instrument
✔ Better protection in transit
✔ A cleaner, more professional setup

Sometimes, the biggest improvement isn’t adding something new, it’s fixing what’s already there.

Sustainable packaging is moving fast, and materials are evolving with it.
One option we’re seeing more demand for is Green Cell Bio foam. Here’s what you need to know about this starch-based material:

→ Offers shock protection similar to polyethylene
→ Delivers thermal performance comparable to EPS (Styrofoam)
→ Is a fully biodegradable, water-soluble alternative

In the right applications, it can be a practical way to reduce environmental impact without compromising protection.

Worth considering if you’re reviewing your packaging materials. Like to know more? Give the team a call.
