Field Notes Friday: When Pests Make Their Own Way In

Pests can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps and sometimes, they make their own way in.

During a recent inspection, our team found pavement ants chewing through sealant along the side of a building to reach a nearby food and moisture source. The marks they left behind showed exactly where they were getting inside.

The solution? Treat the nest, then properly repair the opening to help keep ants from returning.

Pests don’t take fall off anymore.

We surveyed public health inspectors across Canada, and 77% told us pest seasons are starting earlier and running longer than they were just a few years ago. Rodents and ants came up most often.

If you run a business, keep your monitoring, exclusion and sanitation going through the fall. Pest pressure isn’t easing up the way it used to.

Same goes at home. Once it gets cold, mice start looking for a way in, so it’s worth sealing gaps around doors, windows and pipes, and keeping food in sealed containers.

Field Notes Friday: Following the Signs

Rodents are creatures of habit. They often travel the same routes day after day, leaving behind clues that can reveal how they're getting into a building.

During a recent inspection, our team identified a well-worn path through the grass leading directly to an opening in the exterior of a facility. Signs of rodent gnawing around the entry point helped confirm activity and pinpoint where rodents were gaining access.

By following these signs, we can identify entry points and recommend the right corrective measures, including exclusion materials, sealing gaps, and targeted exterior control strategies.
Effective rodent management starts with a thorough inspection. Understanding where rodents are coming from is the first step toward helping keep them out.
