Did you know ticks aren’t insects?

They’re arachnids, related to spiders and scorpions, with eight legs instead of six.
Ticks don’t jump or fly. Instead, they “quest,” waiting on grass or brush for a passing host.
Ticks can stay attached for days, which is why quick and proper removal matters. The longer a tick remains attached, the greater the potential risk of transmitting infections such as Lyme disease.

Late summer is still an important time to stay tick aware. After spending time outdoors, remember to check yourself, your pets and your gear.

Stay tick aware through the end of the season.

Bravo and Simon stole the show at CIPHI!

This week, Abell was proud to attend the Canadian Institute of Health Inspectors conference, and we brought along two very special team members: Bravo and Simon, our bed bug scent-detection dogs.

Together, Bravo and Simon have sniffed out more bed bug infestations than most of us can count. Alongside Service Manager Tom, they spent the conference talking with health inspectors and demonstrating just how accurate and reliable a trained nose can be for early detection.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to meet the dogs and chat with our team. It was a great few days connecting with health inspectors from across the country, and Bravo and Simon made a lot of new friends along the way.

Storms can knock loose bee and wasp nests without you knowing it, which means more stinging insects showing up around your home than usual.

Worth doing a quick walk-around after any severe weather. If you're seeing more activity than normal, don't try to deal with it yourself. Give us a call, and we'll take care of it safely.

Happy World Honey Bee Day!

Bees do so much for our gardens, farms, and communities all season long. Today we're celebrating them and everything they do for the world around us.

Big congrats to the University of Guelph on the grand opening of the Luckevich Pinchin Honey Bee Research Centre!

Abell has been supporting bee health research and education at U of G since 2017, contributing over $55,000 along the way. That includes an annual scholarship for students studying pollinator protection and ongoing support for the Canadian Bee Gut Research Project.

Seeing that support grow into this brand new 15,000 sq ft facility is pretty special. It's hive-inspired, has research labs, classrooms, bee breeding facilities, and 300 managed hives. Just an incredible space for the work happening there.

Here's why it matters: about a third of the food we eat depends on bees doing their job. Our support for the Bee Gut Research Project is helping expand DNA testing of bee gut samples from across the country, so researchers can catch disease earlier and learn more about what keeps pollinators healthy.

Congrats to Paul Kelly, the whole HBRC team, and everyone at U of G. We're proud to have been part of this.

Bee or wasp? At a glance, they can look almost identical, but the details tell a very different story.

Bees are fuzzy, calm, and built for pollinating. They'll only sting if truly threatened, and since a honey bee can only sting once, it rarely picks a fight. Wasps, on the other hand, have sleek, smooth bodies and a shorter fuse; they can sting multiple times and are quicker to defend their territory.

Knowing the difference means knowing when to admire from a distance and when to call in the pros.
