AN INTERIOR DESIGNER’S UNPOPULAR OPINIONS | No. 1

YOUR HOME DOESN’T NEED ANOTHER ACCESSORY. IT NEEDS BETTER EDITING.

Yes, really. 😉

Another cushion. Another decorative vase. Another accessory you’ve convinced yourself will finish the room.

But sometimes, the problem isn’t what’s missing. It’s what’s already there.

And before anyone accuses me of being a minimalist, take a look at these interiors!

I love rooms filled with colour, pattern, texture and personality. I love beautiful objects and spaces that tell a story. A room doesn’t have to be minimalist to be beautifully designed.

The secret is knowing when to add, when to edit and when to leave well enough alone.

Good interior design isn’t about filling every corner, following every trend or buying more things. It’s about making thoughtful decisions and understanding how everything works together.

After 11 years in interior design, I’ve learned that creating a beautiful space isn’t simply about what you add. It’s about the decisions you make along the way.

Whether it’s your home, a vacation rental or a commercial property, good design should do more than look pretty. It should work beautifully, too.

So, I’m back from Ireland, refreshed and ready to get stuck into some new projects and I’m bringing a few honest opinions with me!

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT | THE HEID OUT 🍻

This week’s Client Spotlight takes us to Cranbrook and one of those businesses that has become so much more than a place to grab a great meal.

Meet Heidi and Jordan, the people behind The Heid Out ,a couple who have built a business around good food, great hospitality and, perhaps most importantly, community.

The Heid Out has become a true gathering place in Cranbrook. With an incredible kitchen led by Chef Rusty and his team of Red Seal chefs, locally inspired food, Fisher Peak Brewing b**r brewed right on site, live music, events and spaces that bring people together, there’s a lot happening under one roof.

But what really stands out to us is the people behind the business.

Heidi and Jordan genuinely care about their community. They understand that being a successful local business isn’t just about what happens inside your four walls ,it’s about the relationships you build, the people you support and the community you help create.

And that’s exactly the kind of business we’re proud to work with.

New Project | Behind the Scenes

Ever wonder what happens before the furniture arrives and the transformation begins?

I’m currently deep into planning a November project, and there’s a lot more happening behind the scenes than most people ever see.

🔎 Sourcing ; researching options for paint, flooring, furniture, lighting, fabrics and finishes.

🎯 Narrowing it down ; taking dozens of possibilities and carefully selecting the ones that work with the space, the budget and the overall design direction.

📋 Proposals ; presenting curated options so my clients have choices without being overwhelmed.

💬 Feedback & approvals ; working through the details with the owners until we’re completely aligned.

This planning stage alone has taken approximately six weeks and not one piece of furniture has been ordered yet.

That’s the part of interior design people don’t always see.

The research.
The sourcing.
The measuring.
The comparing.
The problem-solving.
The conversations.

Because good design isn’t about rushing to buy pretty things.

Good design is researched, considered and intentional.

And that’s what I’m working on right now. 🤍

Now that the Summer season has ended, most of the licensed venues in BC, are 'relaxing' in to the shoulder season; or planning a very well deserved break.

Like many businesses, LCRB Inspectors also have more time - They tend to use this to catch up on their inspections. That means it's a great time to have a staff meeting; especially if you are experiencing a seasonal staff change over:

Remind your team what to expect when an Inspector visits your work place. Make sure they know what documents and records that will be requested; and where to find them. Explain your expectations with regard to ID checking, minors in general, over-service, and of the specific requirements for your licence type.

Running an effective staff meeting in a bar requires balancing a relaxed environment with clear operational focus. Hold these 2 to 4 times a year, lasting 20 to 40 minutes, or up to 2 hours if paired with detailed training, or skills like cocktail making. Do have pre-shift huddles as required, of 5 to 10 minutes to cover immediate shift needs.

Most importantly, make a record of your meetings and huddles, including what was discussed, and who was present. This is not only great business practice, it also demonstrates 'Due Diligence'.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT | GOAT STREET 🐐 | RADIUM HOT SPRINGS

Goat St Restaurant in Radium was one of those projects where our clients took on an established restaurant business and completely re-imagined it to suit their vision.

The transformation included reworking the interior layout and décor, making changes to the menu and food offering, creating a completely new outdoor area, and developing a well-thought-out drinks offering and service bar.

Anyone who has visited the restaurant can understand the vision that Kevin Serrano and his team have brought to life.

That vision extends right through to their branding and logo, which grabs the attention of travellers as they pass by and highlights a venue that they should check out.

There was also an important licensing component to the project.

The previous owners had unfortunately allowed the restaurant’s liquor licence to lapse. On the plus side, a fresh application allowed us to choose the right class of licence for Kevin’s business model, as well as secure approvals for the various endorsements required to make it work.

We were happy to help Kevin and his team achieve their goals, working through the licensing requirements and supporting the vision they had for Goat Street as they brought the restaurant to life.

Delicious fresh food , great drinks ,and a fantastic atmosphere, we highly recommend you stop in and check it out for yourself, you won’t be disappointed 😋

Employing Minors in Licensed Businesses:

This a question that keeps coming up, and the answer depends very much on the nature of your business. Was with all regulations there are also various exceptions, but here is a simple breakdown:

Liquor Primary:

If you have approval for minors to be in your premises, then you may employ them; but they cannot be involved in serving liquor at all. (There are exemptions for Licensed Arenas - please contact us for further information).
If there is a restriction on the hours minors may be present - your minor employees most follow the same rules.

Food Primary & Licensed Catering:

Minor employees (like customers) may be present at any time. Minor employees of 16 or over may not open, pour, or mix drinks; but they may carry open drinks to tables. They can also clear tables of unfinished liquor. They must be under the supervision of adult staff while doing so. Minors at Catered event can be restricted by LCRB or the host.

Liquor / Licensee Retail Store (LRS):

Minors cannot be employed in LRS - They may be in the store while accompanying an responsible adult.

Rural General Stores (RLRS):

Unaccompanied minors are allowed in RLRSs and may be employed in these stores. However, minors cannot purchase liquor or be involved in the sale of liquor -They can be involved in receiving liquor orders in storage room; stocking shelves in liquor section; and assembling liquor orders for pick up (excluding bagging at the till). The can also process recycling returns for empty liquor containers.

Special Events (using SEPs) :

Minors cannot be in the liquor service area, or be involved in Liquor Service.

Liquor Manufacturing Sites:

Minors can be employed in a manufacturing facility and and in any endorsement areas, but may not be employed to sell or serve liquor.

Please feel free to reach out if you have questions - We hope this helps make the varying rules more clear.

Pro Tip: If you have staff working in more than one kind of licensed area, it is key for them to understand the difference between the requirements for each area - This often causes issues for Resort style businesses or hotels, that may house multiple licensed areas....

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT 🌊 “THE SEA STORE”

(Shuswap Lake)

This week’s Client Spotlight introduces you to one of the most unique, challenging, rewarding and downright fun projects we’ve had the pleasure of being involved with.

Meet Mike & Tammy Helfrick, the owners of Reds Seastore on Shuswap Lake , the first (and, so far, only) fully floating Rural Licensee Retail Store in BC.

Yes… fully floating. 😎

The Sea Store has been a fixture at Cinnemousun Narrows for decades, but Mike & Tammy had a bigger vision. Turning that vision into reality required creative thinking, problem-solving and, more than once, looking at things from a completely different perspective.

That’s one of the things we love most about working with our clients at Anderson Consulting & Interior Design ,every project is different, and sometimes the best solutions come when you’re willing to think outside the box.

And this one certainly did.

Today, The Sea Store has become an incredible hub for lake traffic, offering just about everything you could need ,groceries, fishing tackle, marine gas, b**r, w**e, candy, water toys and some seriously cool lake gear.

They’re also known for their great fishing advice… and apparently their ability to attract the occasional famous visitor! 👀

Mike & Tammy had the vision, the determination and the courage to do something nobody else had done.

We were thrilled to be part of the journey.

This is exactly why we love what we do.

Every client has a story. Every project has its challenges. And sometimes, the most rewarding projects are the ones that don’t fit neatly inside the box.
