At Farm-Rite, we believe the happiest customers are the ones who embrace learning all about their septic system. We are proud of the RM of Springfield for promoting Septic Awareness Week and for inviting fellow residents to signup to learn more. Hopefully this can save many of our rural living folks costly service calls and/or replacements.

From September 16 to 20, 2024, the RM of Springfield is supporting the Manitoba Onsite Wastewater Management Association (MOWMA) in raising awareness about the importance of proper septic system maintenance during Septic Awareness Week.

MOWMA will be hosting two free webinars on Thursday, September 19th for Manitoba homeowners to provide valuable information on how septic systems work and how to maintain them to ensure long-term, reliable service. A well-maintained wastewater treatment system helps protect human health and the environment by effectively managing household wastewater.

Upcoming webinars for Manitoba Residents:

It is always a delight to follow-up with a customer after installing their septic system and to see how well they’ve done in protecting their septic field with flax straw over the winter. Big shout out to our customer for an excellent job!

So glad we could help this farmer drain his field. Here’s hoping that rye crop comes in strong. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🌾

A septic system replacement in Manitoba generally involves five main scope of work items:

1. Site Assessment & Permitting
- Conduct a soil test (percolation test) and site evaluation.
- Determine the appropriate septic system design based on soil conditions and property size.
- Obtain necessary permits from Manitoba Conservation and Climate (or the local authority).

2. Old System Decommissioning & Excavation
- Pump out and properly dispose of the contents of the existing septic tank.
- Disconnect and remove the old septic tank and field components.
- Excavate and prepare the site for the new system.

3. Septic Tank & Field Installation
- Deliver and place the new septic tank, ensuring proper bedding and leveling.
- Connect inlet and outlet plumbing, effluent filters, and watertight seals.
- Install the new leaching (drain) field (we recommend total area fields) as per regulations.
- Schedule and pass final inspection with regulatory authorities before covering the system.

4. System Connections & Testing
- Connect the system to the building’s plumbing and ensure proper venting.
- Test water flow, check for leaks, and ensure proper function of all components.
- If applicable, install effluent pumps and alarm systems.

5. Backfilling, Grading & Final Inspection
- Backfill the excavation with appropriate material, avoiding compaction over the field.
- Grade and contour the area to direct surface water away from the system.
- Dispose of excess dirt.

PREGNANT and/or NURSING while drinking from a private well?
Please consider testing for nitrate levels. This is especially important if you live near places that:
a) use chemical fertilizers
b) have livestock barns and manure storage areas
c) apply manure to land
d) have human waste from oversaturated septic fields and/or leaking septic tanks or holding tanks (Farm-Rite can help!)
e) soil that contains nitrogen compounds from naturally decaying organic matter
