Sometimes, a phone call can make a big difference.

If you have an aging loved one who lives alone, you may worry about whether they're getting enough social connection, especially when you can't always be there yourself.

The Canadian Red Cross Friendly Calls program connects adults with trained Red Cross personnel who call regularly to provide conversation, emotional support and connection to community resources.

And the best part? It's free.

Calls are generally weekly and can be tailored to the participant's needs. The program is available across Canada to adults 18 and older who could benefit from more regular connection.

It's not a replacement for family visits or professional care. Sometimes, it's simply another friendly voice in someone's week.

If someone you love could use a little more connection, this is a resource worth knowing about

Is your loved one actually eating?

This Thanksgiving, you may be enjoying a big meal with family.

But while you connect with independent loved ones, there may be signs that they are not meeting their nutritional goals.

Is the fridge looking unusually empty, or full of expired food? Are groceries sitting unopened? Have they stopped cooking meals they used to enjoy? Are they losing weight or simply losing interest in food?

Sometimes, the problem isn't that someone doesn't want to eat. Cooking, shopping and preparing meals may have simply become too difficult.

There are ways to make things easier.

One local resource we love is Westend Seniors Activity Centre, which offers a meal program with fully cooked meals that are ready to reheat. Delivery is also available for seniors who don't drive. Best part? They are genuinely delicious! (We've sampled their menu and couldn't find a thing we didn't like)

Small changes like having nutritious meals readily available can make a big difference in helping someone continue to live independently at home.

What happens when the person who usually helps needs help?

Maybe it’s your daughter who drives your loved one to appointments, picks up groceries and checks in throughout the week. Or your sister who helps with meals and errands.

You’ve found a routine that works, and everyone is managing.

But what happens when that person gets sick, goes on vacation, has a busy week at work, or simply reaches a point where they can’t keep doing everything?

It’s something many families don’t think about until they’re suddenly faced with it.

Having a "backup plan" can make a big difference. Think about who else could help with errands or appointments, what community resources are available, and whether some of the regular tasks could be shared with family or supported through home care.

A backup plan isn’t expecting the worst. It’s making sure one person doesn’t have to carry everything.

If you’re not sure what options are available, give us a call. We’re happy to offer guidance.

Falls Are Not a Normal Part of Aging

đź’ˇ Ensure hallways and stairways are well lit

Coming home from the hospital is only the beginning.

After a long hospital stay, your loved one may come home weaker than when they went in.

They may have spent weeks mostly in bed.
They may have lost strength and mobility.
Their usual routines may have disappeared.
Even something as simple as showering, getting dressed, or making a meal may feel exhausting.

So what can you do?

Start small.

🪴 Get back into a routine. Regular meals, getting dressed, personal care and a consistent sleep schedule can help bring normalcy back.

🚶 Encourage movement. Even small amounts of activity can be a step toward rebuilding strength and confidence.

🥗 Focus on nutrition and hydration. Recovery takes energy, and eating well can be difficult when someone is tired or has little appetite.

đźšż Help them get back to feeling like themselves. A shower, clean clothes, washed hair and getting out of bed can make a bigger difference than we sometimes realize.

đź’› Be patient. Recovery isn't always a straight line. What feels like a small accomplishment one day may be a huge one after a long hospital stay.

Home care can help with personal care, meals, mobility and everyday routines while your loved one works toward getting back to their normal.

The goal isn't simply to get someone home, it's to help them feel at home again.

Maybe your loved one doesn't need someone there every day.

Maybe they just need a little help with the things that have become harder.

A couple of hours a week to help with:

• Grocery shopping
• Meal preparation
• Housekeeping
• Personal care
• Getting to appointments
• Or simply having someone check in

The goal isn't to take over, it's to provide the right amount of support, when it's needed.

Sometimes, a few hours of help each week can make life easier for your loved one and take some of the pressure off the people who care for them.

And as needs change, the support can change too, Home care doesn't have to mean 24/7 care.

Raising kids and caring for an aging loved one?

You don't have to be the only one keeping all the plates spinning.

As the kids head back to school, look for ways to share some of the responsibility:

🍂 Need someone to check in? The Canadian Red Cross offers free Friendly Calls for regular social connection.

🍂 Need help finding local resources? Call 211 and ask about supports available for seniors and caregivers.

🍂 Looking for connection and activities? WE Seniors Edmonton is a wonderful community resource offering programs, social opportunities, wellness activities and support for older adults.

🍂 Feeling overwhelmed? Make a list of everything you're doing; appointments, groceries, meals, errands, check-ins, and see what can be shared, simplified or supported.

You don't have to do everything yourself to be there for someone you love.

We're proud to partner with organizations like WE Seniors Edmonton that help older adults stay connected, supported and engaged in their communities.

And if you're not sure where to start, give us a call. We're always happy to offer guidance.

Let’s say your mom has recently been assessed by AHS and you’ve been told she qualifies for home care.

You’re relieved. She’s going to get some help.

But then you start wondering…

“Who is actually going to provide the care?”

Here’s something many Alberta families don’t realize:

With Client-Directed Home Care Invoicing (CDHCI), eligible clients can have more choice in who provides their authorized home care services.

Instead of simply being assigned a provider, you can choose from approved providers that deliver the services outlined in your care plan.

For families, that can mean having more say in who comes into your loved one’s home and provides their care. When you're trusting someone with the care of someone you love, that choice matters.

Not sure how CDHCI works or whether it might apply to your situation?

We're happy to help you understand your options.

"I think we need a nurse."

It's one of the most common things we hear from families exploring home care.

While nurses provide essential clinical care, many people actually need support with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, mobility, meal preparation, and personal care.

That's where Health Care Aides come in.

In Alberta, Health Care Aides are regulated professionals who play an important role in helping individuals maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life at home. These caring professionals are typically who provide the every day care people need to stay in their homes.

Not sure what type of care is right for you or a loved one? We're happy to help.
