I've got six kids, and Alberta politics is starting to remind me of watching them argue.
The middle child is yelling at the oldest to stay out of their business, while simultaneously telling the youngest exactly what to do.
Sound familiar?
Our provincial government wants Ottawa to stop interfering in Alberta's affairs. There's even serious talk about separation.
Meanwhile, that same government is trying to consolidate power and dictate decisions that have traditionally been municipal responsibilities.
Here's what really bothers me about the timing.
Edmonton just had an election where infill was a major issue. There was plenty of organized, well-funded opposition, and voters still elected a pro-infill council.
That doesn't mean every infill policy is perfect. Far from it. I think some things have gone too far.
But council has been listening, making changes, and discussing further adjustments.
That's how local democracy is supposed to work.
We don't need the province stepping in to override a debate Edmonton voters just had.
Especially not while that same province is telling Ottawa to mind its own business.
The hypocrisy would almost be funny if it weren't so frustrating.
And I can't help thinking the timing is awfully convenient for a government with plenty of other things it would rather we weren't paying attention to.
I voted for these guys in the past. I'm increasingly embarrassed to admit it.
