Yesterday has quickly become one my F A V O R I T E days of the year!

For the past five years, I have exclusively done in home consultations for local clients. It makes my heart so happy when I walk into a home with a father on board for their sleep journey, engaged in the conversation and absorbing all the information that is relevant to their child. Those dads beam with pride when we talk about their children and it is hands down, one of my favourite parts about this job!

Until I can confidently enter your home again, it saddens me to say that I have decided to exclusively do Zoom consultations until COVID-19 has completely subsided. It is something I look forward to resuming but in our house, we has an immune compromised daughter and during this time, I need to consider her health first. Trust me when I say that I can’t wait to see your cute babes and see those adorable nurseries again!

Okay, let’s talk about N A P T R A N S I T I O N S. Most toddlers give up their morning naps between 15 - 18 months.

When do you know that it's time to make this happen?

• When children are getting a solid 10-11 hours at night.
• When your kiddo starts to take longer and longer to fall asleep for their morning nap.
• When they consistently take shorter morning naps OR sleep too long in the morning and refuses their afternoon nap.

Once you see those changes, what’s your next step? Well, I'm so glad you asked.

• Gradually push the morning nap later but don’t let that nap get stuck in the late morning. Push it to ‪12:30 pm - 1:00 pm‬ and have it lasting anywhere from 2 - 2.5 hours.
• If your child sleeps for an hour and wakes up tired, try to settle him back to sleep or use a back up nap plan.
• Do not let your little one sleep past ‪4:00 pm‬ so they have enough sleep pressure for bedtime.
• During the 2-1 nap transition, try to get your child to sleep earlier to help them from becoming overtired.
• Keep an occasional two nap day if required but limit the morning nap to 45 minutes.

Motherhood was something I never thought I was cut out for.

The ups and downs of a single hour can be overwhelming. Early mornings and night wakenings are completely exhausting. The emotions that flood through a toddlers body are unpredictable. That fun activity that you were looking forward to can be ruined in only a few short moments.

But then there’s all those amazing times too. Like when your kid asks for one last hug before bed. Or when they call out your name just to tell you they love you. My favourite is when they declared you “the best Mommy ever!” and they believe that statement full heartedly. Those moments are magic!

This is us! All snuggled together on a Saturday morning. All the silliness, the love, the laughing and my postpartum acne together in one spot! This is me, in the midst of being a mother to three pretty awesome kiddos!

Some local Edmonton companies and I are doing a pretty awesome giveaway to celebrate Moms and I want you to win it! It closes tonight so check out my last post to help you enjoy motherhood just a little bit more! Enjoy this weekend. You deserve it.

Bedtime R O U N TI N E S shouldn’t be more then 15 minutes! It should be a time that signals to your child it’s time to unwind and prep their mind and body for rest. Repetition and structure helps a bold feel safe and secure. Take this time to build a secure relationship with your kiddos. Talk about their favourite part of their day, give them extra snuggles and really try to work some undivided attention into the mix.

Around B E D T I M E , have you ever noticed your child getting a S E C O N D W I N D? A bit hyper? A burst of silliness? Perhaps even a full meltdown.

This is typically what I would call a S T A G E T H R E E sleepy cue. What happens is their little body releases hormones which act as a mild form of adrenaline - aka fight or flight response. Because this response is heightened, it will take somewhere in the realm of 45 minutes to normalize that response likely resulting in a full blown meltdown.

If you see this behaviour happening often, move your child’s bedtime earlier - prior to them displaying these emotions.

Being quarantined has given us a B R E A T H of fresh air. It really put the hustle and bustle into perspective for me and how busy we really were! I mean, don’t get me wrong, the beginning was rough and scary with all the uncertainty surrounding us but I’m really E N J O Y I N G life now and I think my kids are too!

During this time, I hope my kids remember that time when we did crafts A L L day long, or set up the bouncy castle in the living room, or that day we made forts and ate snacks in them. I hope they remember our daily nature walks to the mailbox, racing tooth picks in the water logged ditches, and doing school work with me as their teacher. The slow down is good. It’s exactly what I need! I hope it’s been good for you, too! @ Saint Albert, Alberta
