YES, I MAKE HOUSE CALLS!

Estate planning is important — but that doesn't mean it's always easy to get to an office.

Mobility challenges, transportation, caregiving responsibilities, illness, or simply feeling more comfortable at home can make a traditional office appointment difficult.

That's why I offer home appointments.
Sometimes, meeting clients where they are can take one more stressor off their plate during a process that may already feel emotional or overwhelming.

And a home appointment doesn't mean the professional safeguards disappear.
When necessary, I still meet privately with the person giving the instructions. This allows me to speak with them independently, confirm that I am receiving their wishes and instructions, and address concerns around capacity or potential undue influence.

My goal is to make estate planning accessible and comfortable without compromising the integrity of the process.

Because sometimes good service isn't asking a client to come to you.
It's meeting them where they are. 💚

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS IF YOU DIE WITHOUT A WILL IN ALBERTA?

There's a common misconception that if you die without a Will, the government simply takes everything.

That's generally not what happens.

Instead, you die “intestate.”

That basically means you didn't leave instructions, so Alberta law provides the instructions for you.

Your estate is distributed according to rules set out in Alberta's Wills and Succession Act.

Depending on your family situation, that may mean your estate goes to your:
• Spouse or Adult Interdependent Partner
• Children or other descendants
• Parents
• Siblings
• Or, if necessary, more distant relatives

Who receives what depends on which relatives survive you and your particular family circumstances.

There's another important difference:
Without a Will, you haven't chosen an executor.

Someone may have to apply to the Court to be appointed to administer your estate.

You also haven't left instructions in a Will about things like:
• Who you want to receive your estate
• Who you want managing it
• Specific gifts or sentimental belongings
• Your wishes regarding guardianship of minor children

So dying without a Will doesn't necessarily mean your family receives nothing.

It means you give up the opportunity to decide many of these things yourself.

That's really what intestacy means.

Alberta has a plan for your estate if you don't make one.

The question is: is Alberta's plan the same as yours?

A major relationship change is an important time to review your estate plan. Don't assume your old documents still accomplish what you want them to.

Your business may be one of your largest assets. What happens to it if you die or become unable to manage your affairs?

Anyone with children — even adult children
Estate planning isn't only about young families. It can help make your wishes clear, reduce uncertainty and make an already difficult time easier for the people you leave behind.

And estate planning isn't only about what happens when you die.

A Power of Attorney and Personal Directive can help answer another important question:

Who will make decisions and manage things for you if you're alive but unable to do it yourself?

You don't need to be wealthy.
You don't need to own a huge house.

And you definitely don't need to be a senior.

If you have people you love, assets you've worked for, or wishes you want respected, it's worth having a plan.
