Swedish Death Cleaning, or döstädning, is a process of decluttering and organizing your belongings with the goal of reducing the burden on your family after your death. The steps involve communicating the process to loved ones, regularly sorting items by asking if they are needed or if anyone would be happier to have them, and systematically discarding, donating, or gifting items. Begin with less sentimental areas, sort items into categories (keep, donate, discard, give away), take your time, and don't forget digital clutter, all while taking breaks and being kind to yourself emotionally.
Use the Key Questions: When sorting, ask yourself two crucial questions about each item:
Will I ever need this?
Will anyone I know be happier if I keep it?
If the answers are both no, the item should be discarded.
I can help with someone starting this process.
