One of our First Nation monitored sewage lift stations recently experienced an issue. With troubleshooting support provided over the phone, local First Nation workers were able to identify and resolve the problem themselves.

No emergency contractor call-out was needed, saving time and money while building capacity.

Here is an example of planned maintenance gone wrong due to compounding failures affecting the sewage lift station. Failures are often caused by more than one issue. Environmental conditions, equipment problems, electrical issues, and even day to day operations can all play a role.

We work with communities to better understand these patterns and help reduce the risk of failures before they become emergencies. Monitoring trends and identifying warning signs early can help improve reliability, support maintenance planning, and protect critical wastewater infrastructure. Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes:

When temperatures fluctuate above and below 0°C, water seeps into small cracks in materials like concrete, asphalt, and soil.
When that water freezes, it expands by about 9%, putting pressure on those cracks and forcing them to grow.

Over time, this leads to:
- Cracked roads and foundations
- Shifting or uneven surfaces
- Pipe damage and leaks
- Structural weakening

And the worst part?
This damage builds slowly, until it suddenly becomes a major failure.

One of the biggest risks to infrastructure isn’t equipment, it’s knowledge loss.

In many communities, critical systems are managed by one or two experienced operators. Over time, they develop a deep understanding of how those systems behave:

- Which pumps struggle in certain conditions
- Which alarms require immediate action
- Which temporary fixes are actually long term realities

This information usually isn't written down.

When experienced operators leave, critical system knowledge often goes with them.

New staff inherit complex systems without context, often operating them outside optimal conditions without realizing it. Over time, this leads to increased stress on equipment, reduced lifespan, and avoidable failures.

Systems should retain knowledge, not just people.
