🚒 STRAITS FIRE DEPARTMENT
⚠️ PUBLIC SAFETY REMINDER – PLANNED POWER OUTAGE

With the planned power outage scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, October 17, 2026, Straits Fire Department would like to remind all residents to take extra precautions when using generators, propane heaters, camp stoves, and other alternative heating or cooking equipment.

While these devices can be helpful during a power outage, improper use can lead to fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, serious injuries, or fatalities.

🔥 IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS:

✅ Generators: Always operate generators outdoors, at least 20 feet (6 metres) away from your home, with exhaust directed away from doors, windows, and vents. Never operate a generator inside a home, garage, or enclosed space.

✅ Propane Heaters: Only use heaters specifically approved for indoor use. Follow all manufacturer’s instructions and ventilation requirements. Never use outdoor propane heaters inside your home.

✅ Camp Stoves & BBQs: Never use outdoor propane camp stoves, BBQs, or charcoal grills indoors. These devices can produce deadly carbon monoxide.

✅ Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms: Ensure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly and have battery backup.

✅ Fire Prevention: Keep heaters and other heating equipment at least 1 metre (3 feet) away from combustible materials. Never leave heating equipment or open flames unattended.

✅ Be Prepared: Have flashlights, batteries, warm clothing, and emergency supplies readily available.

⚠️ REMEMBER: Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless gas that can be deadly.

Your safety and the safety of your family are our priority.

Straits Fire Department encourages everyone to plan ahead, use caution, and check on elderly neighbours and anyone who may require assistance during the outage.

We'd like to advise our customers on the Northern Peninsula of two upcoming planned outages affecting communities north of, and including, Castor River South. These outages are required for our teams to complete critical capital upgrade work to transmission lines in the region and help maintain service reliability.

The outages are scheduled for Saturday, October 17, from 7:00am to 3:00pm and Sunday, October 18, from 7:00am to 5:00pm, pending suitable weather conditions. Please note, not all communities will be affected by both outages. A full list of affected communities is available on our website.

Due to the nature of the work being completed, requiring significant crew members and equipment - we ask residents and visitors to please stay aware of activity in the area.

We realize that outages are disruptive and we thank you for your understanding as we complete this essential work.

Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.
