Hello Tyaughton Lake Community,
Here is a status update from your Volunteer Fire Brigade, including our May update and activities planned heading into June.
We currently have 17 volunteers, with 14 fully trained and certified in S100 and S185. Three additional volunteers will be taking the course on June 13–14.
Twelve volunteers now have handheld radios, and 16 volunteers have NFPA 1977-rated wild land fire fighting shirts.
We have renewed our Board of Directors and Officers insurance as of May 20th, and we have also secured a $5,000,000 Commercial General Liability policy to help protect our volunteers.
We recently sent our Mark 3 pump to a BC Wildfire Service mechanic, and it is now fully serviced and ready for deployment.
The brigade has acquired:
* Mark 3 fire pump
* A steel construction box for secure gear storage
* 1,000 feet of brand-new forestry fire hose
* Four nozzles
* Various attachments and splitters
We currently have two ATV towable trailers:
* One dedicated to gear, pumps, and hoses
* One small water tender trailer generously donated by the District of Lillooet
May Activities
Minto Site FireSmart Clean-Up – May Long Weekend
We had a great turnout from property owners, with approximately 15 property owners participating, along with Michelle Norte from Minto and Jason Murphy, our SLRD FireSmart Coordinator, to conduct FireSmart work around the critical infrastructure Minto communications tower.
There was so much material cleared that we will be bringing in a mini excavator and dump truck in mid-June, when I return to the lake, to remove the debris.
June Activities
Since the equipment will already be on site for debris removal, anyone wishing to do additional clean-up work between now and June 20 is encouraged to do so, and we will remove the material at that time.
Forest Fire Hazard Level sign
We have acquired a Forest Fire Hazard Level sign from the B.C.Wildfire Service, that will be maintained by the fire brigade and from the support of locals. So keep an eye out near the end of June for the sign to be place either at the entrance to Tyaughton Lake Rd and Hwy 40., or at the top of the hill at Mowson pond.
Muster Station Build-Out
One of our properety owners has generously offered the Fire Brigade a 20’ x 20’ section of her property to serve as our muster station. The site is centrally located on the lake and will have its own private access off Tyaughton Lake Road for trailer access, equipment storage, and a muster station information board.
While completing the Minto clean-up around June 20, we will also begin clearing and preparing this site.
Training
We have training planned for the end of June to help volunteers become familiar with our pump systems, radios, and working together as a team.
This will continue to be a work in progress, but we now have a solid foundation in place, and we look forward to serving the community and for your support.
Regards,
Stu Salter
