WASPS AND HORNETS

🐝 Wasps and hornets have similar hairless bodies with the main difference being size and colour. Wasps are one centimeter to two and a half centimeter, and hornets are larger. Wasps are black and yellow and hornets are black and white. Each colony of these insects has a queen. The queen can give birth to thousands of offspring, depending on the conditions of her surroundings. If the nest is located in a cool, damp place with plenty of food, the number of offspring will be high. Most wasp and hornet colonies are considerably smaller for most of the year. They reach peak size in September before frosts kill off most of the colony. Queens can live up to five years. Drones, the males in the colony, can live for 40 to 50 days. Worker bees, the females in the colony, live between one and four months.

Some signs you might have wasps or hornets are:
- You notice an increase in wasps and hornets around your house
- You can see them entering and exiting through holds in your brick grout, or other small areas entering your soffit areas
- You can see a wasp or hornet nest

WASP SEASON

🐝 Wasp season in Ontario generally runs from July through September, with peak nuisance levels in late August and early fall.

Here is the typical yearly timeline for wasps:
Spring (May to June): Overwintered queen wasps emerge from hibernation to build nests and lay their first eggs. You rarely see workers at this time.
Midsummer (July): Worker wasp populations surge as the nest reaches maximum capacity.
Late Summer to Fall (August to October): Food sources dwindle, making wasps highly active and aggressive as they scavenge for sweets and human food (e.g., sugary drinks, meat). Activity ceases immediately upon the first hard frost.

BAT EXCLUSIONS

🦇 Bat exclusions in Ontario require humane, one-way exit methods executed outside of the sensitive maternity season (prohibited from June through early August). Because all bat species are protected under provincial law, killing, trapping, or sealing them inside a structure is illegal.

Legal Rules and Timing

Protected Status: Governed by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and Endangered Species Act(for species like the little brown myotis).

Maternity Season Ban: No exclusion work is permitted from June to early August because flightless baby bats are present in the roost.
Safe Windows: Exclusions should take place from mid-August through October (fall) or April to May (spring) before pups are born.

The Exclusion Process
Inspection: Find all roof gaps, vents, soffits, and crevices used for access.
One-Way Doors: Attach specialized mesh tubes or cones over main entry points so bats can fly out at night but cannot re-enter.

Sealing: Permanently seal all secondary holes with steel mesh, caulk, or heavy-duty flashing only after confirming all bats have exited.

Cleanup: Safely clean and disinfect areas with guano accumulation to prevent health risks like histoplasmosis.

BATS IN GUELPH

🦇 We mostly have little brown bats, but we do have the occasional big brown bat in this area of Guelph. They have sharp teeth, allowing them to snag bugs out of the air using sonar location. Unfortunately, bats have died by the hundreds of thousands because of a fungus called white nose syndrome. It kind of grows throughout their body, making them squirm around and feel itchy while they're supposed to be in torpor.

This isn't quite hibernation but when they wiggle around too much because they feel itchy, it depletes their fat stores and they die from starvation.

It's very sad and has significantly reduced the bat population. Hopefully they will make a come back because they eat many bugs, especially mosquitoes.
