Were you expecting sunny skies but ended up in a torrential downpour?

I was counting on a warm, summery September, full of sunshine before welcoming fall’s crisp temperatures. Reality had other plans: cold rain, high winds, and an inside-out umbrella.

We’ve all been there, when reality collides head-on with your expectations.

Half the battle of navigating unexpected events in life or business is keeping your composure, finding the humour in the mess, and pivoting promptly.

Small victories count! Reminding yourself of what you’ve already weathered is proof that you have the inner wisdom and strength to pivot through whatever storm is hitting you right now.

Spoiler alert: AI couldn't save me time in the hiring process or deliver the results it promised...

My hiring process turned into an experiment. I wanted to know if AI-assisted hiring would be more successful than my traditional targeted approach.

My own targeted search yielded 25 applications that I promptly reviewed without wasted time. I'm impressed by the top five.

LinkedIn AI-assisted hiring provided 148 applications. I am impressed by the calibre of the top 10 even though it took longer than expected to find them.

In contrast, Torre-ai didn't live up to its promise as an end-to-end, AI-powered platform that functions as a full hiring system.

Even though the Torre application required several years of admin experience, it gave me many that shockingly had none! Sorting through the 225 applications took laughably longer than expected and sadly didn't provide valuable results.

Did AI save me time? No! Quite the opposite.

Investing the extra time in LinkedIn AI-assisted hiring should be worth it.

Building my team is about quality over quantity. Just like building my client base.

I decided to experiment with three options to find my ideal EA team member. And I would love to hear your thoughts on these:

1. A more traditional, focused approach by me. I posted the details and a link to the contract application form in targeted areas where admins hang out.

2. LinkedIn job postings, enhanced with AI features. It is giving me quantity... I'm sure there is excellent quality, like my own targeted search. The volume requires digging and panning to find gold.

3. Torre.ai is even heavier on quantity. So far, it's debatable whether it will save me time or give me better candidates as it promises to. I am giving it a fair chance. Stay tuned and I will share results soon!

The posting is closed now, and I have way more applications than I expected. I have been digging through the results and am excited about the gold I'll uncover this week.

I’m honoured to be joining Sarah Noked tomorrow LIVE to deliver a guest expert training session to OBM School students! 🤩

My training session will be focused the importance of transferable skills and mindset when making the transition from VA to OBM.

I’ll be teaching how to transition existing clients from VA support into OBM-level support, having those conversations with clients confidently, shifting how you communicate, and what VAs may need to unlearn as they step into the OBM role.

I’m super excited to connect with the Online Business Management students, share my experience and knowledge, and encourage them! 🧡

Just over two years ago, I took on a role as an elected board director. At the time, I had no idea it would lead to launching my business as an Online Business Manager, or that it would reshape how I serve my clients.

Joining the IAAP Foundation Board was transformative. I donated countless hours over those two years because I believed deeply in what we were doing, from strategic planning and awarding grants to distributing scholarships to admins.

Serving at that level gave me a front row seat to what real, sustainable impact looks like. It highlighted a few major truths about growth:

The first few months working together are all about creating a solid foundation.

Within six months, you feel the momentum kick in.

Within a year, you look back and realize just how far you have come together.

I bring the same high-level strategic focus to my clients. We create a foundational action plan, take it step by step, and focus on implementation that leads to impactful growth.

As my time on the board wraps up, I am so grateful for the experience. I am excited to turn my energy towards my clients and open up space for new ones, to help them reach their next big goals.

People often ask me what the difference is between an Online Business Manager (OBM) and a Virtual Assistant (VA).

Occasionally I even get the question, "Isn't a Virtual Assistant your AI tool?" In some cases, yes, people may call their AI tool their VA...!

However, when I say Virtual Assistant, I am referring to a real human administrative assistant. This VA is an indispensable support for us as business owners.

Connecting with fellow business owners is such a gift. We are there for each other through both fun times and those difficult moments of growth when you need someone to believe in you.

I was inspired by a conversation with a group today about what metrics we each track. It gave me new food for thought and shifted my thinking. This summer I decided to focus on different metrics.

The number of walks per week. Number of restful sleeps per week. Because rest is a requirement, not something we earn after we wear ourselves out.

The number of real conversations I engaged in each week. Did I ask for help when I needed it? That is definitely the hardest for me!

How much my aim improves in dodgeball by the end of the season... That will be mainly for amusement factor.

Perhaps the most important will be: did I invest meaningfully in relationships with clients and was I supportive to friend-preneurs?
