Baffinland and the Qikiqtani Inuit Assoc. (QIA) will be hosting the Annual Project Review Forum (The Forum) in Arctic Bay from September 22-24, 2026.

We are currently seeking youth and Elder delegates from Arctic Bay, Clyde River, Igloolik, Pond Inlet, and Sanirajak to participate in this year’s Forum. Youth delegates must be between 18 – 30 years of age, and Elders must be 55 years of age and older.

The Forum provides an opportunity for community members to receive updates on the Mary River Mine, discuss matters related to the Project and surrounding communities, and share feedback on Baffinland’s operations, including mitigation and monitoring programs. Participants can also make recommendations for overall Project improvements.

If you are interested in participating, please contact your Baffinland Community Liaison Officer or your local QIA Community Liaison Officer before July 22, 2026.

The Forum is one of the negotiated benefits of the Inuit Impact Benefit Agreement (IIBA) and brings together community representatives, QIA, and Baffinland to share information, discuss priorities, and strengthen ongoing dialogue.

The 2026 Shipping Season is fast approaching, and members of Baffinland’s Sustainable Development and Community Strategic Development team recently visited Pond Inlet to meet with the Hamlet Council and the Hunters & Trappers Organization.

During the meetings, Caleb Sangoya, Community Relations Guide, and Cortney Oliver, Sr Manager of Environmental Social Governance, shared plans for the upcoming season, including several mitigation measures to reduce environmental impacts. These measures include limiting vessel speeds to 9 knots to minimize noise and disturbance, maintaining safe distances from marine mammals, using fixed routes and a designated marine shipping lane, avoiding ecologically sensitive areas, using convoys when possible, and more. They also discussed the environmental monitoring programs Baffinland plans to conduct during the season.

Baffinland will be hiring a team of Inuit Shipping Monitors who will be based in Pond Inlet to provide round-the-clock updates on vessel locations and activities throughout the season via social media and VHF radio.

Baffinland understands the importance of the shipping season to the local community and takes our role in protecting the environment and respecting Inuit culture seriously.

Today, on the National Day of Mourning, we take a moment to remember and honour those who have lost their lives, or experienced serious injury or illness, as a result of their work. This day is also an opportunity to refocus our commitment to preventing future workplace injuries and deaths.
