Here are some interesting facts about Skunk:

* Skunks are best known for the strong-smelling spray they use for defense. They can accurately spray up to about 3–5 metres (10–15 feet).
* Before spraying, they usually give warning signs like stomping their feet, raising their tail, or hissing.
* A skunk’s spray can cause eye irritation and nausea, but it is rarely dangerous to humans or pets.
* Skunks are mostly nocturnal, meaning they are active at night.
* They are omnivores and eat insects, grubs, mice, berries, eggs, garbage, and pet food.
* Skunks actually help control pests by eating insects and rodents.
* They are excellent diggers and often make dens under decks, sheds, porches, or wood piles.
* Baby skunks are called kits, and a group of skunks is sometimes called a surfeit.
* Skunks have poor eyesight but a strong sense of smell and hearing.
* In colder Canadian winters, skunks become less active but do not truly hibernate.

Some quick tips to do around your home to prevent mosquito breeding.

1. Eliminate Standing Water (Biggest Impact)

Mosquitoes lay eggs in water, and it doesn’t take much.

* Dump anything that holds water weekly (buckets, toys, tarps)
* Clean out gutters and downspouts
* Refresh birdbaths every 2–3 days
* Check low spots in lawns where water pools
* Empty plant saucers and wheelbarrows

Even something as small as a bottle cap can breed mosquitoes—this is the #1 thing that actually works.

2. Get the Yard in Shape

Mosquitoes rest in cool, shaded areas during the day.

* Cut back tall grass and weeds
* Trim shrubs and hedges
* Remove yard clutter (wood piles, debris)
* Open up airflow in shaded areas

A cleaner yard = fewer hiding spots.

3. Check Screens & Entry Points

* Repair holes in window and door screens
* Make sure doors seal properly
* Keep garage doors closed when possible

This keeps mosquitoes from becoming an indoor problem.

4. Consider Fans for Outdoor Spaces

Mosquitoes are weak flyers.

* Install or use fans on decks and patios
* Even a small breeze makes it hard for them to land

5. Time Your Outdoor Activities

* Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk
* Try to plan yard time outside those peak hours when possible

6. Wear Smart Protection

* Light-colored clothing
* Long sleeves when possible
* Use repellents when needed (especially in wooded or damp areas)

7. Talk to Your Pest Control Provider Early

Don’t wait until peak season hits.

* Book treatments in early spring
* Ask about barrier sprays or seasonal programs
* Combine professional treatment with your own prevention steps

8. Work With Your Neighbours

This one gets overlooked.

* If nearby yards have standing water, it affects you
* Coordinated prevention makes treatments much more effective

With tick season upon us here are a few tips to help with the situation.

Ticks are more than just a nuisance—they can carry diseases like Lyme disease, so prevention is key, especially in spring through fall. Here’s a clear, practical guide to help you stay protected:

🏡 Around Your Property
• Keep grass short and trim bushes regularly
• Remove leaf litter and brush piles where ticks thrive
• Create a barrier (gravel or wood chips) between lawns and wooded areas
• Keep firewood stacked neatly and dry
• Discourage wildlife like deer and rodents (they carry ticks)

🚶‍♂️ Personal Protection Outdoors
• Wear long sleeves and long pants when in tall grass or woods
• Tuck pants into socks to block ticks from reaching skin
• Stick to clear, well-maintained trails
• Use insect repellents with:
• DEET (for skin)
• Permethrin-treated clothing (kills ticks on contact)

🐕 Protect Your Pets
• Use vet-recommended tick prevention products
• Check pets after they’ve been outside
• Keep pet bedding clean and regularly washed

🔍 Tick Checks (Very Important)

After spending time outdoors:
• Check your body thoroughly (behind knees, armpits, scalp, waistline)
• Shower within 2 hours if possible
• Wash and dry clothes on high heat to kill ticks

⚠️ If You Find a Tick
• Remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers
• Pull straight out—don’t twist
• Clean the area with alcohol or soap and water
• Watch for symptoms like rash or fever
