Today, we honour the memory of our colleague Morgan Kitchen, who tragically lost his life a year ago while fighting the Jasper wildfire. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. We want to recognize all our firefighters, contractors and staff members who face danger to keep communities safe.

It's the time of year again when you might notice more bats in your neighbourhood! In August, bat pups are learning to fly and may end up roosting in unusual locations, like doorways, inside homes, or even on the ground!

So, what should you do if you spot a bat pup? Leave it alone, the bat is sleeping and will fly off in the evening or within a few days. Remember to never touch a bat, dead or alive, with your bare hands.

If a bat is roosting low down where children or pets are likely to come into contact with them, they may need to be moved. For information on moving a bat, please contact the BC Community Bat Program:

This fall, trees were enhanced in the Kootenay for bats and birds πŸ¦‡πŸŒ²πŸ¦ Two methods to enhance wildlife habitat. The first method uses chainsaw modifications to mimic naturally-occurring habitat features, like frost cracks, while trees are inoculated with native fungi to establish heart rot in the tree, allowing animals like birds to feed and establish excavations. The second method uses a product called BradenBark to mimic old, sloughing bark for bats to roost in. Pictured here is a wildlife tree using the second method, installed through Wildlife Conservation Society Canada's work at NTBC's Columbia River Wetlands Conservation Area.

Researchers for our Southern Interior Mule Deer Project arrived at the McDougall Creek burn site to find that someone had removed the camera and lock, leaving the bear guard behind. From the burn pattern on the tree, they believe the camera would have survived the fire. These cameras are all password protected and useless to anyone but those gathering data for better managing our wildlife in the SIMDeer Project.

Should anyone come across a Reconyx camera with a SIMDeer label on it, please let us know, no questions asked - we just want to get the equipment and SD card data back to the researchers.

We at the BCWF and the SIMDeer project rely on volunteers' dollars and hours to make this project a success, and the loss of an expensive research camera and the SD card data is a setback. Thanks!
