Ka∙kin Group’s “Meet the Staff” feature continues today with a focus on our Youth Coordinator, Ashlyn Brewer.

Her connection to local youth is a huge benefit to Ka∙kin. During high school, she served as a youth councillor with the Ktunaxa Nation Council and she’s a Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it member. Ashlyn, who graduated from high school earlier this year, says transitioning to Ka∙kin has been a great experience. “There’s a lot to learn,” she says.

She and her family are very in touch with their Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it roots. “We have been engaged with our Indigenous culture, both the ups and downs. We enjoy being nice and connecting to people.”

She keeps active with winter walks with her dog, and love to dance at powwows in the summer. Ashlyn her sights set on continuing her education, seeking a degree in psychology. “I want to either go into psychology or become a psychiatrist because I’m very interested in the human way of taking in life,” Brewer says. “I think that’s very cool, and I want to get to know every individual aspect of that.”

Stay tuned for our next “Meet the Staff” feature!

Later this month, we will recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. September 30 is a day dedicated to honoring the lives lost and the survivors of the residential school system. It’s a day to reflect on the painful history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and a chance to commit to meaningful actions towards healing and justice.

This day is a reminder of the resilience of Indigenous communities and the ongoing work needed to address the impacts of colonialism. It’s an opportunity to listen, learn, and support the truth and reconciliation process.

Kakin Group encourages you to support Indigenous-led initiatives, and engage in conversations about how we can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society.

It is officially one month until we recognize Orange Shirt Day, a moment of reflection and respect for Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Orange Shirt Day falls on September 30, coinciding with National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. September 30 is a powerful reminder of the impact of the residential school system and the resilience of those affected. The national holiday started with Phyllis Webstad's story, whose orange shirt was taken away on her first day at St. Joseph’s Residential School near Williams Lake in 1973.

Wearing orange on September 30 symbolizes our commitment to reconciliation and our respect for the survivors and their families.

Let’s take this opportunity to educate ourselves, listen to Indigenous voices, and support efforts toward healing and justice.

Together, we can work towards a future where every child knows they are valued and respected.

Orange Shirt Day marks its 10th anniversary this year. Orange Shirt Day founder Phyllis Webstad answered kids’ questions about the history of the commemorati...

Ka∙kin Group’s “Meet the Staff” feature continues today with a focus on Wylie Henderson, our Communications, Social Media Coordinator.

You might recognize Wylie from his six-year stint on the airwaves in the East Kootenay at Rewind Radio/B104 where he served as News Director, or possibly through his role as the official play by play voice of the Cranbrook Bucks. “Last summer, I came to a decision that I needed a change in my professional life,” Henderson says. “While I enjoyed my time on the radio, I knew I needed something with more stability for myself and my family, and this opportunity with Ka∙kin seemed like, and has been, a perfect fit.”

Marketing is a new challenge for Wylie, one he is happy to take on. “A lot of the skills I learned through my broadcasting career transfer perfectly to a marketing and communications role,” he says. “Being able to utilize my skillset in an area where I can make a positive change has been a breath of fresh air.”

Wylie grew up in Vancouver. He’s an avid fan of the Vancouver Canucks, a BC Lions season ticket holder and a lover of classic hip hop. He has settled in Cranbrook with his wife and stepdaughter.

Ka·kin Group’s Meet the Staff feature continues with today’s edition featuring Youth and Strategic Partner Relationship Coordinator, Michael Spoonhunter.

Michael, a Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi ‘it member, joined Ka·kin in 2023. He provides support to Ka∙kin’s economic development initiatives within the Elk Valley Region, and works closely with Yaqit a knuqli’it leadership. As a young man traversing his way through the workforce, he recognizes the importance of staying connected with local youth. “The youth are our backbone,” Spoonhunter says. “We need to build them up while we build and grow because they’re our future.

His roots run deep in the Elk Valley and South Country, having spent a large chunk of his childhood in Grasmere. “It’s awesome, there’s the lakes, there’s the river, there’s fishing, there’s hunting, there’s so much out here and it’s a gorgeous landscape,” he explains. “You want to preserve it. That’s one of our big initiatives.”

When away from the office, Michael keeps active with his love of sports. Basketball and football are big sources of entertainment for him, and he has become an avid golfer over the last few years, though rumours of his single-digit handicap are greatly exaggerated. “It’s probably closer to forty,” he jokes.

Stay tuned for Ka·kin's next meet the staff feature!
