If there is one thing I've learned, it's that at times, when our heart is pulling us in a specific direction, we have to make that leap, even if we don't know exactly where we'll land. For as long as I can remember, I wistfully fancied living in the Okanagan Valley but never gave it too much serious air time, due to the rhythms and responsibly that make our life. Sometimes however, things change in a flash where you just have to just hop that boat, before it gets too far away again from shore.
Fast forward - after 5 years of running InspireWorks solely and craving a team, I find myself working with an incredible team at Sobey Graduate Career Services out of SMU, this time offering boutique services to primarily brilliant and accomplished international students from across the globe, many of whom have already been making a name for themselves in their own industries - individuals who left their thriving businesses, lucrative positions, families, and homes to come to Canada to follow their dream.
How do you think I began feeling about my own unwillingness to seriously consider and follow my own dream? Surely if these wonderful souls can up and move across the globe, I too can follow my dreams of moving to Kelowna and driving across Canada. Shame on me for allowing fear to dictate and procrastinate. Covid hit. Wham!
Nothing like a pandemic to help you evaluate and recalibrate. Life is short! Tomorrow isn't promised!
1.5 years later and I am happy to say that I have been coast to coast in our beautiful country. After a short time reconnecting with family and enjoying the expanse of AB, gaping wide-mouthed at the Rockies, and enjoying the beautiful vistas, beaches, parks and vineyards in the Okanagan, I am so happily settled in Kelowna and am ready to get back to business full swing.
The lesson in all this for me is that a dream without determination, discipline, and daring, is just that - a dream.
However we also fare much better when we have a supportive tribe that has our backs and encourages us to follow our own course, no matter how different than theirs, and the ability to recognize the right time when it comes, it will never be ideal - if we wait for ideal, it will never happen.
Here are a sampling of what I get to regularly enjoy. I miss Halifax and the amazing friends and 'family' I made there but sometimes we have to follow the leanings of our spirit, where we are inspired to go whether this is personally or professionally.
In an effort to show more support as part of your tribe, I will be once again posting anything that is inspiring, informing, engaging or entertaining when it comes to our careers and how they impact our life and satisfaction, my wish is that you all enjoy , and if you haven't, that you have the courage to stop being wistful and start being more determined, disciplined and daring to find it!
