“Radon is silent, invisible, and odorless — but once you understand how it works, it becomes one of the easiest health risks to control.”

Most homeowners have no idea how simple the solution really is.

Radon doesn’t behave like anything else in your home.

You can’t see it like mold.

You can’t smell it like smoke.

You can’t hear it like a CO alarm.

And it doesn’t trigger symptoms or discomfort.

It quietly enters through cracks, foundations, sump pumps, plumbing gaps — anywhere your home touches the ground.

Over time, it accumulates indoors, especially during the winter when homes are sealed tight.

Long-term exposure is the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers in Canada.

That’s the bad news.

Here’s the good news:

Radon is one of the most fixable indoor air quality issues.
Once you test and know your number, the path forward becomes crystal clear.

Effective radon mitigation can:

✔ Dramatically lower radon levels
✔ Prevent future exposure
✔ Protect families for decades
✔ Improve overall indoor air quality
✔ Bring your home back into the safe range

The risk is invisible — but the solution is proven, reliable, and more affordable than most homeowners think.

Understanding radon isn’t about fear.

It’s about empowerment.

Take control of the air you breathe.

“A radon map won’t tell you your home’s number… but it can tell you why every BC homeowner should test.”

And the East Kootenays light up the map for a reason.

A lot of people look at the BC Radon Map and feel either reassured… or alarmed.

But here’s the truth most people miss:

Radon maps don’t predict the level in your home.

What they do show is how likely your region is to have elevated radon — and the East Kootenays are one of the biggest hotspots in the province.

Why?

Because our geology is naturally high in uranium, the element that breaks down into radon gas.

That means:

✔ Entire neighborhoods can show elevated readings
✔ Two homes beside each other can test very differently
✔ A “low-risk” map zone can still have dangerously high homes
✔ The only accurate reading is the one from your own house

The map is a tool — not a diagnostic.

It’s meant to increase awareness, highlight high-risk regions, and empower families to take action before the invisible danger becomes a long-term health problem.

If your area shows up on the map, it’s a sign.

If you live in the Kootenays? It’s a big sign.

Want to know your home’s real radon level?

➡️ And if you've already tested and your results are elevated, request a free mitigation quote to learn how we can safely reduce it.

Maps raise awareness — testing brings peace of mind.

“Not all radon test kits are created equal — and choosing the wrong one could give you a false sense of safety.”

Here’s how to make sure you get accurate results.

When it comes to radon, guessing is dangerous — and knowing is everything.

But many homeowners get confused about which radon detector to buy:

Short-term? Long-term? Digital? Charcoal? Continuous monitors?
And the truth is, some kits simply aren’t accurate enough to give you a clear picture of your home’s risk.

A good radon test kit should:

✔ Be certified for Canadian standards
✔ Test for a meaningful length of time
✔ Work well in winter conditions
✔ Provide reliable lab analysis or continuous monitoring
✔ Clearly tell you whether you’re above or below Health Canada’s guideline (100 Bq/m³)

Why does it matter?

Because the East Kootenays have some of the highest radon readings in BC — and the only way to know if your home is safe is to test with the right tool.

Once you have your reading, you can take action confidently. No guesswork. No uncertainty. Just real data that protects your family.

If you haven’t tested your home yet, now is the perfect time.

“Radon has no symptoms. None. And that’s exactly why it’s so dangerous.”

Most people don’t notice anything… until years later.

You can’t smell radon. You can’t see it. You can’t taste it.

And unlike smoke, mold, or carbon monoxide, radon doesn’t cause headaches, coughing, or irritation.

It gives zero warning signs — which is why so many families never realize their home has elevated radon until long-term health issues appear.

Radon is the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers in Canada, and the risk grows with continuous exposure inside your home.

Here’s what makes radon so tricky:

✔ You can feel perfectly healthy while living with high levels
✔ New homes can be just as vulnerable as old ones
✔ The only way to detect danger is through a radon test
✔ Once you know your number, fixing it is straightforward

This is why awareness matters — and why every East Kootenay homeowner should test at least once. Your home is supposed to protect you, not silently expose you.

Testing is easy. Fixing high radon levels is easier than most people think.

The hardest part is simply not knowing.

“Fresh mountain air doesn’t protect your home from radon — in fact, many East Kootenay homes test far above Health Canada’s safe guideline.”

And most families never find out until years later.

It’s easy to assume radon isn’t a concern when you live somewhere as clean and beautiful as the East Kootenays. We’re surrounded by forest, mountains, and fresh air — so how could the air inside our homes possibly be dangerous?

Here’s the truth:

Radon doesn’t come from pollution… it comes from the ground.
And our local geology — especially around Kimberley, Cranbrook, Invermere, Fernie, and the Columbia Valley — is naturally high in uranium, which breaks down into radon gas.

That means:

✔ Two homes on the same street can have completely different radon levels
✔ New homes can test high
✔ Old homes can test high
✔ Renovations, energy upgrades, and sealed foundations can increase indoor levels
✔ And you won’t know unless you test

Even families with no history of smoking end up at risk — because radon exposure is the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

Your home might be safe. Or it might not be.

But testing gives you the clarity and peace of mind every homeowner deserves.

“If radon had a smell, a color, or a sound… every homeowner in the East Kootenays would already be talking about it.”

But the danger is silent — and that’s exactly why it gets overlooked.

Most people never think about radon until they test.

And honestly? That’s the problem.

Radon isn’t like smoke, mold, or carbon monoxide — it doesn’t burn your eyes, trigger allergies, or cause headaches. It just quietly builds up inside your home… sometimes for years… with zero warning signs.

That’s why it’s now recognized as the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers in Canada.

Here in the East Kootenays, our geology makes radon more common than people expect. Even brand-new homes can have high levels. Older homes? Same thing.

Radon doesn’t care how well you clean, how much you exercise, or how healthy you are.

The only way to know if your air is safe is to test.

And here’s the part most people don’t realize:

➡️ Radon is easy to measure
➡️ Radon is easy to fix once you know your number
➡️ A mitigation system can bring levels down dramatically

Awareness is everything — because the risk is real… but the solution is simple.

If you’ve been putting off testing your home, this is your sign to finally do it.

➡️ Get your radon test kit today
➡️ Or request a free mitigation quote if you already know your home tested high

Your home should be the safest place you breathe.

“If opening your windows actually lowered radon, the East Kootenays wouldn’t have some of the highest levels in Canada…”

But here’s the part most homeowners don’t know.

When temperatures drop and homes seal up for winter, radon levels start rising — fast.

A lot of people think, “I’ll just crack a window and the problem goes away.”

And yes… opening windows can temporarily lower radon.

But only for a short time, and only while the window is open.

The moment your home warms back up and the windows close, the stack effect pulls radon from the ground right back inside.

So while ventilation feels like an easy fix, it doesn’t solve the problem — and it definitely doesn’t protect your family long-term.

In high-radon zones like Kimberley, Cranbrook, and surrounding areas, winter conditions make radon worse because:

✔ Homes are sealed tight
✔ The ground is frozen
✔ Indoor air pressure drops
✔ Radon gets trapped inside

This makes November–March the highest radon season of the year.

Testing isn’t about fear — it’s about awareness. Because once you know your number, the solution is simple and effective.

My home in Kimberley tested higher for radon than smoking two packs of ci******es a day… and I had NO idea. If it can happen to me — it can happen to any East Kootenay homeowner.

When my family and I moved into our home in Kimberley, I thought we were safe. I’d spent over a decade with the Canadian Coast Guard and North Shore Search and Rescue, so keeping people safe has always been part of who I am.

But when I tested my home for radon — a simple test anyone can do — the results nearly knocked me over.

👉Over 900 Bq/m³
👉Far above Health Canada’s guideline of 100 Bq/m³
👉Far more dangerous than anyone should ever be exposed to

That’s when everything changed. I learned how to reduce radon levels, built my first mitigation system, and started helping other homeowners across the East Kootenays do the same. Because no one should have to wonder whether the air in their home is safe.

Now, during Radon Action Month, I’m encouraging every homeowner to take the same simple step I did: test your home.

Because the danger is invisible — but the solution is easy once you know your number.

Now is the best time to test your home — November marks Radon Action Month in Canada because winter conditions trap radon indoors and levels typically increase as homes stay sealed up.

If your home has already tested high, we’re here to help — request a free mitigation quote and we’ll walk you through the safest, simplest way to fix the issue.
