Some fieldwork photos from the other day 🌱

We spent the day collecting and planting willow, along with a few other species, on a landslide in Griffin Pass to help stabilize the slope and support natural restoration.

Willow is pretty amazing — you can plant cuttings straight into the ground, and with the right conditions, they’ll start rooting and growing into a thick web that helps bind the soil and reduce sedimentation into downstream habitat.

With guidance from community knowledge holders, we planted 840 baby hemlock trees in Kitasoo Bay, along with an additional 210 seedlings in the community.

In about 8-10 years, these trees should be the right size to support future herring egg harvesting. We can already imagine the next generation of harvesters using them🌲

We are very grateful for the opportunity to learn about this important practice, and to better understand how forestry work can support community priorities, traditional food harvesting, and future generations.

Reforestation does not stop once seedlings are in the ground.

Over the ten years after a forest stand is replanted, we return to these areas several times to check how the young forest is developing and whether the trees are healthy, growing well, and becoming established.

These checks are called silviculture surveys. Surveyors walk through harvested and replanted areas to assess tree survival, growth, spacing, competing vegetation, and overall forest health. The information collected helps us understand how each area is recovering, whether any additional care is needed, and what the stand may look like for future generations to have harvesting opportunities.

Last week, we walked through areas planted between 2016 and 2025, including Alexander Inlet, Cougar Bay, James Bay, and Watson Bay. Everywhere we looked, young western redcedar, Sitka spruce, yellow cedar, balsam fir, and western hemlock were thriving.

HEMLOCK PLANTING COMMUNITY OUTING IN KITASOO BAY

We are gathering interest for an outing to Kitasoo Bay this Sunday, on a beautiful sunny Indigenous Peoples Day💚

We have sourced hemlock seedlings to plant for future herring egg harvesters. In about 8 years, they will be easily accessible and ready for harvesters to use.

Help with planting would be greatly appreciated, but community members are also welcome to come along to guide the planting and witness this important work in support of a traditional food source.

We are currently planning for Sunday, but there is a possibility that ongoing forestry boat repairs may push the outing into next week. I will confirm with interested folks by Saturday evening.

Updates from your forest company!

Kitasoo Forest Company’s engineering team has been hard at work laying out harvest blocks on Susan Island in preparation for harvesting this fall. The Kitasoo Xai’xais Stewardship Authority field crew has nearly completed surveys across every block, identifying monumental cedars, Indigenous forest resources, and culturally modified trees.

Fish biologists have already completed their assessments, and next up are geoscientists and archaeologists, who will help ensure we are prioritizing a wide range of forest values throughout the planning process.

This current engineering phase is expected to wrap up in July, with harvesting planned for early fall.

As a company 100% owned by the Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation, this work supports the Nation’s economic resiliency and independence while ensuring forestry is practiced with cultural values and future generations at the forefront.

COMMUNITY CEDAR BARK HARVEST: SATURDAY 🌿

Saturday, May 30 at 1:00 PM

We will meet at Kitasoo Lake, paddle canoes across, and harvest on the other side of the lake. The walking is relatively flat once we arrive.

Please bring:
• Snacks
• Weather-appropriate clothing
• Walking boots
• Water
• Gloves
• A hatchet
• A paring knife

As many of you know, Kitasoo Forest Company will be involved in some clearing around Kitasoo Lake this summer to allow for increased storage capacity. This is an opportunity to gather cedar bark before those trees are removed 💚

Thank you to KXSA for their help with this harvest!

Please share with anyone who may be interested to get the word out.

There may also be an opportunity on Monday, June 1 if there is enough interest- please let us know if you can't make this weekend but would want to go on Monday.

Amazing work from the participants in last week’s wildfire response and chainsaw operation courses!

We also want to specifically recognize Lisa Reandy for her commitment and engagement to these learnings throughout the entire week. It was awesome to see a youth take on this opportunity, overcome new challenges, and grow with confidence. Way to go!

Another shipment of premium dry firewood has arrived!

It is Kitasoo Forest Company’s honour to provide firewood to every household, helping ensure community members have what they need for winter months. This is an important part of how forestry supports the well-being of community- but we couldn’t do it without the members who step up each year to make sure the wood is stacked, stored, and ready for delivery.

A huge thank you to James for leading the stacking effort this year, with support from Jack, Leonard, and Ivy. Your hard work and commitment are deeply appreciated.

We will begin household firewood deliveries this fall, so keep an eye out for upcoming posts with information on how to get your name on the delivery list!
