My curiosity was rewarded today! Last November I left some Sedum stems as an experiment to see if any insects would overwinter inside- and it worked!

From what I learned online, these are Small Carpenter Bees (Ceratina sp.), generalist pollinators that are important insects to support in our gardens. They nest and overwinter inside stems such as raspberry canes … and our proof - Sedum stems too!

🐝💛So happy to share back on the outcome of my little experiment, and hopefully inspire more ecological gardeners and gardens… for the wellbeing of people, and nature 🌱🌼

What is going on here? Well!… The winter garden (lettuce, kale, broccolini, snap peas) seeded 8 weeks ago was ravaged by a flock of California Quail! 😳

I didn’t know they group into such big flocks, but there were at least 15 of them! They munched everything down to the soil (except the snap peas on the trellis… these just had their lower leaves mowed off)! 🙃

So… I’m trying an early frost cloth to cover some new seeds. Hopefully this gives my clients a better chance at some winter greens. I’m hesitant to use wire in case the birds get tangled in it.

🌿 It’s plant install time! This garden design was completed over 2 years ago and the clients have chipped away at installing the garden beds and paths themselves.

🍁 This fall, it’s finally time to add plants! …and bring colour, texture, and beauty to the surroundings of their lovely home!

🌼 It was a pleasure to be there to support with plant delivery and layout - this is where ‘knowing your plants’ is a huge asset, saving the client time and heartache trying to read the plan and match plants to their proper placement on the site.

Such a fun and rewarding stage in a landscape design project - love it!!

I have to admit, I’ve been a bit distracted from gardening lately with my new sourdough obsession… It has been so fun baking and exploring this whole new world!

I have wanted to try having my own starter for years, but always felt intimidated by it. But when someone in my neighbourhood posted authentic San Francisco sourdough starters, including an instruction sheet and bread recipe, I jumped on it!

It’s only been 6 days, and I’ve made 5 loaves, 8 buns, two batches of chocolate chip cookies and waffles with my starter. (See… obsession 😂)

Oh, gotta go, the timer is beeping!

Goji berries, have you tried them?

They are listed as having several health benefits but are equally of concern when from imported sources that can contain pesticides and other toxins from preservation methods.

I was delighted to find a neighbour with plants available! Can’t beat home-grown Goji berries - no chemicals, no preservatives.
