On my recent trip to Costa Rica, I brought back the very first stained glass I ever made. It was done in the copper foil method and lacked a frame. Rather than just put it into a zinc frame, I decided to adapt it by adding a glass border around it first, using lead came for a more professional finish. I’m so glad with how it came out. Here is the before and after.

The church conversion project is installed!

It was a long day. Packing the glass panels carefully in a van for a 2 1/2 hour trip to Halifax, and then it took 6 hours to install them.

First we took out the existing moldings, then installed an base-frame to rest the centre panel on. This was notched where the rebars were so it could distribute the weight evenly. Then we screwed the panel onto that base through the zinc frame. Then we added another finishing trim to finish it off. It’s very solid.

It’s common to run into problems when installing into an older building as window openings can be skewed or uneven and we did have to adjust the upper left side, but the woodworker/installer that I hired to help me with this job was terrific and he was very skilled in shaving the moldings and adjusting the opening to make things fit properly.

All in all this job took me over a month to complete, working hard every day. I’m very happy with how it turned out and my client is over the moon.

Completing the set on the large centre panel. To help support it structurally, I used internal strong line to help support the arch.

Joints are carefully cut to create a flowing lead structure and nice solder points.
Once the panel is completely soldered on both sides (You should have seen me flipping this thing by myself. So heavy) I then putty and polish both sides, before installing 2 rebars at the back, to further strengthen and support the panel in place.

Moving along with the church conversion project, I’ve finished the two flanking panels, and started on the large centre panel. I had to buy a plywood board to build it on because it didn’t fit on my table. The board will also serve to transport it for installation.

A pretty large commission job in a church conversion. A large centre panel, flanked by 2 smaller ones.
It starts with going onsite to measure the openings and see how it might be installed when it's finished. Then we make a design with some glass samples to submit for approval by the clients. Once a final design is established, a full size drawing is made (in double) to set the panel, and to cut all the glass according to each piece.
Here you can see the windows where the panels will be installed, the full sized pattern, and the start of one of the flanking windows.
