My fourth "AH-HA INSIGHT" to celebrate Womens Day Week is that Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the single biggest predictor of excellence and performance, and a strong driver of leadership.

EI is the ability to be aware of moods and energy of self and others while generating behaviours to effectively manage and regulate emotions. To be a strong leader, you need to show self and social awareness, as well as the ability to manage your emotions.

As a woman, if you don't have a high EI, showing strong emotional reactions will usually give you an extra penalty vs man.

Tips to be more self-aware:
- Take note of the context in which your emotions manifest and what happens in your body when they do;
- Practice meditation and mindfulness to better manage your temper;
- Ask yourself if you are reacting in a way that is proportional or not to what is happening.

Tips to self-manage your emotions:
- Practice replacing undesired reactions with constructive reactions;
- Breathe, pause, slow-down;
- Subtract yourself from the situation for a couple of minutes.

These tips will enhance your relationships and your impact. In the end, that's a big part of what you need to be a strong leader!

As it is Women's day this week, I will share one "ah-ha insight" per day, around how women evolve in a different way in the professional landscape, more specifically around negotiating, navigating the double bind, giving and receiving feedback, emotional intelligence and work-life balance.

My third "AH-HA INSIGHT" is around feedback: the base of working as a team to build trust. Without it, people will be in fear and there will be no accountability. Here are some insights around giving and receiving feedback:

1- Because women are socialized to creating smooth interpersonal relationships and aim for harmony, they may have emotional reactions to feedback if it is not clear or objective as it will most likely be received as a criticism or rejection.

2- Make sure feedback is articulated in a way where the person will not think they failed at something but rather see that there is an opportunity for their behaviour to improve.

3- To ensure you are highly promotable:
- Make sure you get enough clear feedback and that it adds value for you to evolve and grow in your role. Demand it, you deserve it;
- Look internally for an experienced mentor and a sponsor;
- Surround yourself with a board of external advisors who will motivate you, challenge you, connect you and help you move in the right direction.

Make sure you stay motivated and challenged to stretch, trust yourself and be open to learning new things. It will keep you connected to yourself and evolve toward reaching your career ambitions.

As it is Women's day this week, I will share one "ah-ha insight" per day, around how women evolve in a different way in the professional landscape, more specifically around negotiating, navigating the double bind, giving and receiving feedback, emotional intelligence and work-life balance.

My second "AH-HA INSIGHT" is that women very often have to navigate a double bind, that double standard of either being too nice, or (too) abrasive.

Know that you are "good enough" and that through working on yourself, developing your skills and competencies and being well surrounded, you can do pretty much anything. But how do we navigate through that double standard every day?

1) Accept that sometimes you are on the "take care" / women-like side (team building, compassionate, rewarding, inspiring, etc.) and sometimes you are on the "take charge"/ men-like side (problem solving, influencing, acting decisively, influencing upward, delegating). You may correspond to one type more than the other and that is ok.
2) Try to speed read where others are when you deal with them. You may want to stretch across to embrace characteristics on the "other side" to succeed in a situation or another. It may help knowing what colour the other person is, or what MBTI personality type they have.
3) As a gender, it is expected that women be nice. But if you are too nice, you will lose credibility. And if you are not nice, then people will not like working with you. Know to adjust is the best advice I can give you!
4) As we need more "take care" or compassion in organizations, do not be afraid to bring that side of you out at work. It can be a good strategy for leaders to bring their heart out more to engage and motivate their team, but also to rally people in difficult times and create loyalty toward the organization.
5) Make sure to master the "wild moment" where you take the opportunity when it's there to show that you can go from "taking care" to "taking charge". You will then be respected for having both sides and knowing how to navigate through different situations with grace.

Finally, make sure you know in which type of environment you are at your best in and know how to adjust when you are in different situations. Remember to respect your personal brand and own it too! Your personal brand is your style when you are at your best, make sure you wear it all the time!

To celebrate Women's Day, I will share one "ah-ha insight" per day this week.

"AH-HA INSIGHT" #1: As women, we negotiate differently than man do. Why? Amongst many reasons, we have socially been brought up differently and what we look for first sets the tone for how the whole negotiation goes, which can also create our biggest challenge...

Here are some key nuggets to help you prep your next negotiation differently!

1- Women tend to value relationship over outcome. While it's important to protect great relationships, ensure you don't sacrifice too quickly and stay focussed on your goal.

2- Women make decisions on what they feel they need vs what they are worth. This is not about making people feel they owe you because you are so great, it's about being authentic and confident about your worth.

3- Women often wait to be recognized by others before speaking. To make sure your voice is heard, express yourself early in the meeting, respecting your style assertively (this does not mean you are disrespectful or arrogant!).

Please share to ensure we all support women get better at negotiating. Stay tune for tomorrow's post about "How to navigate the double bind". Talk to you tomorrow!

"All you have is who you are. You carry that everywhere you go!"

"Success is learning to fail. The process is about trying and falling. Getting up. Falling again. Persevering and getting back up. You have to work hard but if you put the effort in, you'll get positive results".

"the power to change is in this room... Are people in the room moving the needle ?"

========================
1) "EDUCATION - you have to know something to be able to change something".

2) "... its only when you know something, that you know what to change and to do that, you need PASSION"

3) "... you have to be willing to COMPROMIZE and give up some ground to move the needle, even if just a little bit"

Par rapport aux femmes et leur leadership:
================================

"Start when they are young! Tell them they are worthy, valued, loved. Also, all men have their word to say! Make room for women to be heard at the table at work and show your little girl that she belongs too".

"You are part of the problem if you are not willing to change". Et aux femmes: "don't take yourself out of the race"!

"Know yourself, be proud of yourself and be proud of your story. Find that pride in who you are, it's your base set of skills. Practice. Try to develop hard skills. And at the end, be comfortable with YOU!"

Et finalement j'ai adoré... "I don't need to be someone else. I can be Michelle Obama. I know how to do that".

Merci Grande Dame Obama.
