Today we wish Les a very Happy retirement!🎉 He was our first employee, and he has been an amazing one over the past 2 years! He will still be around to fill in when needed, but we want to say Thank you Les for everything, and you will be greatly missed!!😊

The Automatic Didn’t Make Trucking Easier — It Made Entry Cheaper
The automatic transmission didn’t ruin trucking.
But the way it was rolled out reshaped the driver — and lowered the standard.
That distinction matters.
Automatics were designed to make driving easier. That part is undeniable. And for veteran drivers — worn knees, bad backs, decades of miles and muscle memory — that ease mattered. It kept good drivers in the seat longer. It extended careers that had already paid their dues.
That’s where the conversation should have stopped.
Instead, the industry saw something else.
A shortcut.
Automatics made it easier to put people in trucks faster, cheaper, and with less investment in skill. Training windows shortened. Expectations dropped. What used to be learned over time became something you could bypass.
That didn’t raise safety.
It didn’t raise professionalism.
And it didn’t strengthen the culture of trucking.
What it removed was apprenticeship.
There was a time when trucking demanded progression. You learned control before convenience. You earned responsibility before comfort. You didn’t get the easier option until you had proven you could handle the harder one.
Not because the industry wanted people to suffer — but because the road doesn’t forgive inexperience.
When the automatic became an entry ramp instead of a relief valve, expectations shifted. Skill stopped being the filter. Experience stopped being the standard. Veterans weren’t the benchmark anymore — they became the exception.
This isn’t an argument against technology.
It’s an argument against replacing standards with convenience.
Veterans should have been given relief.
New drivers should have earned progression.
And trucking should never have been treated like something you fast-track people through.
Progress is supposed to support experience — not replace it.
The automatic didn’t make trucking easier.
It made entry cheaper — and the industry is still paying the price.
