5 Simple Ways to Help Your Child Get Ready for Math This September
The school year is just around the corner. For many families, September means getting back into routines, adjusting to new schedules and preparing children for a new level of learning.
One area that is often overlooked during the back to school rush is math readiness.
After 14.5 years of working with students in Oakville, we have seen that children return to school with very different levels of confidence. Some are ready to move ahead and take on more challenging math, while others may need to revisit a few important skills from the previous year.
The good news is that a little preparation can make the transition much easier.
Here are five simple things parents can do before school starts.
1. Refresh the Basics
Before jumping into new material, spend some time reviewing the skills your child learned last year.
This could be multiplication facts, fractions, decimals, addition and subtraction, or other skills from their previous grade.
You do not need to turn this into a long study session. A few questions here and there can help bring those skills back.
If your child is struggling with something they previously knew, that is useful information. It may be a sign that the skill needs a little more practice before moving on.
2. Look for Gaps Before They Become Bigger Problems
Math is cumulative. New concepts are often built on skills learned earlier.
A small gap may not seem important at first, but as the math becomes more complicated, that same gap can make new concepts much harder.
Pay attention to the areas where your child hesitates, guesses frequently or says, “I don't remember how to do this.”
Those moments can help identify what needs to be strengthened before the new school year gets fully underway.
Addressing these areas early can help prevent a small gap from becoming a bigger challenge later in the year.
3. Don't Forget About Enrichment
Math support is not only for students who are struggling.
Some children are comfortable with their schoolwork and enjoy being challenged. For these students, math enrichment can be a great way to keep them engaged and develop stronger problem solving skills.
Enrichment does not necessarily mean racing ahead into the next grade.
It can mean exploring a concept more deeply, solving more challenging problems or learning to approach a problem in different ways.
The right amount of challenge can make math more interesting and rewarding while helping students continue to grow.
4. Bring Back a Regular Math Routine
Summer schedules are different, and that is perfectly fine.
As September gets closer, however, it can help to gradually bring back a little structure.
A consistent routine is usually more effective than trying to fit a large amount of math into one or two sessions.
Even short periods of focused practice can help children get comfortable sitting down, concentrating and working through a problem again.
The goal is not to fill the last few weeks of summer with schoolwork. It is simply to help children transition back into a regular learning routine.
5. Focus on Confidence, Not Just Correct Answers
One of the best things we can give children going into a new school year is confidence.
When a child makes a mistake, instead of immediately giving them the answer, try asking:
“What did you try?”
“Where do you think you got stuck?”
“Can you try it another way?”
These questions encourage children to think through problems rather than becoming afraid of making mistakes.
Math is not about getting every question right immediately. It is about learning how to think, how to work through challenges and how to keep going when something is difficult.
A Strong Start Makes a Difference
Every student is different. Some need to strengthen foundational skills, some need to rebuild confidence and others are ready for greater challenge and enrichment.
The important thing is to understand where your child is starting and give them the support or challenge that makes sense for them.
After 14.5 years serving families in Oakville, Mathnasium of Oakville has helped students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 build stronger math foundations, develop confidence and continue growing through enrichment.
With two convenient locations in Oakville, we have worked with students at many different levels and understand that every child may need something different to succeed.
As September approaches, take a little time to refresh your child's math skills and identify any areas that need attention. If your child is struggling, do not wait until October to address it. Students who are doing well can also benefit from starting enrichment early and building momentum throughout the year.
