Birch ~
ʔa·kuwaǂwuʔk (Ktunaxa)

Birch bark juice purifies the blood, stimulates kidneys. Brings relief to inflamed or swollen conditions. The wet inner bark may be applied directly to pain. Dry inner bark is used for treating digestive problems.

A decoction of bark juice may be used externally to treat rashes, or cradle cap. Cooled and taken Internally to treat inflamed skin conditions, and ease night sweats. May be used to alleviate depression, anxiety, and conditions of the mind.

Leaves and branches can be used in teas, baths, poultices etc- releasing a lovely wintergreen aroma. The steam is used to relive sinus congestion. Birch is high in salicin, a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, good for treating any pains.

Used to treat hepatitis- alleviates pain and fatigue symptoms. Birch has been found to posses antitumor agents - helpful for treating cancers.

Fresh birch leaves infused with apple cider vinegar for a full moon cycle ~ is used as a nutritive tonic for bone building and strengthening the immune system.

Dried leaves are used to treat urinary problems, kidney stones, cystitis, edema.

Energetically ~ Birch encourages a gentle unveiling of the true self within and helps us to gain clarity of how to live.

Traditional Tobacco-Can’sa’sa share

We cut “Can’sa’sa-Red Willow” only in Winter time and once the Spring comes at Equinox in March we no longer cut it.

“What is done in the Star World we do on Earth.”

Therefore during “Can’sa’sa Ipusye” the Big Dipper becomes a Pipe-Cannunpa and the Sun becomes a live coal into the bowl of the Pipe.

We are the “Wicahunkake Oyate” what we do here on Earth our Ancestors are also doing up above in the Spirit World as well.

This season is known as “Can’sa’sa Ipusye” when we cut and dry it for traditional to***co.

To remove the outer bark we “Can’spu’spu’la” the red willow limb and take the inner bark for our to***co.

(The outermost bark shavings can be saved for making a tea which is good for headaches, and when mixed with sage is good for arthritis. The willow bark is the basis for the ingredients aspirin, a modern medicine.)

When it’s dry then we “Wa’hpu’hpu’la “ it and cut into smaller pieces.

Then once dry you can add other mixes to make what is commonly known as “Kinninkinnick”.

In Lakota we call the mix “Canli Icahiye”.

Some mix non-traditional Pipe to***co with Can’sa’sa , it’s about a 80% to 20% for Ceremony. 80% Can’sa’sa and 20% Pipe to***co. These percentages can vary from teaching to teaching.

Some add “Can’si’si’la” (Chamomile) , also “Wah’pe Canli-Bear Berry “ which grows in the Mountains and “Sassafras bark” which grows where Pipe Stone comes from to mention a few.

We have a term “Wacink’sabya” which is translated as “to live a Natural life as the Creator intended us for as Native People’s”.

It also means we have a clear mind, a clear heart, a clear Spirit and a clear voice when we pray.

With prayer and to***co we believe the Creator will hear our voice.

Spiritual experiences comes with a clear mind, drug free , free of other foreign substances that interfere with Natural Spiritual experiences and prayers.

They come to us naturally.

“The Vision of Tobacco-Can’sa’sa”

The traditional to***co came to a young man during a Vision Quest. “Can’sa’sa” grew from where his tears touched and fell upon Mother Earth instantly as he prayed for a loved one.

He was told in time you will know what the plant will be used for, it was the gift of “Can’sa’sa.”

Also known as Red Osier, and Dogwood “Can unkcemna Sica”.

Everything has a time and a season. We cut Pipe Stem only after the first Thunder Storm in spring. “Wakinyan Agli’pi” brings Water and the Pipe Stem-Can’ Nunpa wont crack or break.

Barrrowed words.
