The Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy (PGFL) is pleased to announce that applications for its 2026 Grants Program will open on Monday, February 9, 2026.
These grants support literacy initiatives that build organizational capacity or strengthen existing, promising practices. Funding may also be used for operational expenses. All projects must have a local impact and focus on adult literacy or family literacy where an adult parent or guardian is involved in the literacy learning.
Types of Grants Available
One-Year Small Grants Program
• $25,000 for one year
• Funding may be used for project or operational costs
Two-Year Grants Program
• $60,000 over two years ($30,000 per year)
• Funding may be used for project or operational costs
Who can apply?
• Canadian registered charities and/or organizations registered as not-for-profits that deliver adult or family literacy services at the local level.
• Eligible organizations must operate literacy training programs or be applying on behalf of groups that operate literacy training programs.
NOTE: National, provincial or territorial organizations may apply as long as the project’s connection to the local level is clear.
Eligible activities:
1. Projects that build capacity within an existing literacy program (for example):
• Curriculum development
• Tutor or practitioner training
• Development of a new approach within an existing literacy program
• Efforts to expand the program to reach new learners
2. Projects that describe and evaluate existing programs to share and promote promising practices (for example):
• Evaluation of an existing practice
• Research into what works and why
• Sharing of promising practices
3. Costs associated with operations including salaries, rent, IT, office supplies, and personnel.
Application Information
Applications must be submitted online through the SurveyMonkey Apply portal, accessible via our website at pgfl.ca. Organizations must register on the portal before starting an application.
Funding availability:
• Up to 15 projects funded through the One-Year Grants Program
• Up to 5 projects funded through the Two-Year Grants Program

The Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy (PGFL) recognizes and honours the work of the late Peter Gzowski in raising awareness and funds for literacy. One of Canada’s most beloved broadcasters, and host of CBC Radio’s “Morningside,” Peter devoted the last 16 years of his life to raising awareness of adult literacy issues. The PGFL continues Peter’s work by supporting literacy projects.
