The end of an era

Today I learned that Scott Murray has passed away. As most of you know, Scott was a stalwart advocate for evidence. His passion for data led to the creation of the International Adult Literacy Survey and its successor PIAAC. We first met when I worked at the Secretary of State, where Scott was responsible for the first-ever national survey of voluntary activity....

Last Call to Complete a Survey

I'm writing today about a project "Root Causes of Low Literacy in Canada: A look at the Impact on Employment." This research is a collaboration between United for Literacy and Blueprint, and funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Skills for Success program. It explores how literacy and essential skills shape adults’ ability to prepare for, find, and keep work, and how programs and services…...

Adult Literacy Presentations – CASAE

In February, I participated in a panel discussion hosted by the Special Interest Group (SIG) on Adult Literacy, of the Canadian Association for the Study of Education (CASAE). The creation of the SIG reinforced my belief that the study of adult literacy requires extra help to garner the attention of academics. Last month, CASAE met in Vancouver. The Adult Literacy SIG hosted a pre-conference event and a symposium....

Literacy Quebec – Portrait of Members

I wanted to share with you a report recently published by Literacy Quebec. Each year Literacy Quebec (LQ) surveys its eleven (11) full members to create a portrait of the network as frontline literacy service providers to English-speakers across Quebec. These community-based organizations provide one-on-one tutoring, group learning, resource sharing, and skills development. This year’s portrait focuses on storytelling, impact, and the regional realities of the communities they serve....
