April is Cesarean Awareness month (CAM). In 2022, 33.9% of births in Canada resulted in a c-section. When a cesarean is necessary, it can be a lifesaving technique that’s worth the risks involved. However, researchers estimate that almost half of cesareans performed could be safely prevented. has great resources on CAM and the movement to improve birth outcomes, go ahead and give them a follow!

I am so proud to provide gender-affirming care to my clients. To me, this looks like: honouring chosen name and pronouns, using gender neutral language when applicable, and advocating for respectful care from providers. It is a firm belief of mine that trans and non-binary people deserve the same access to the family building process as any other group.

There are a variety of interventions used to augment or encourage labour. As with all treatment, you have the right to be informed of the risks and benefits of inducing labour. Doulas can help you speak with your healthcare team to ensure you have the full picture of what they are suggesting. It’s YOUR birth and you have a say in how it goes!
