“Paisley instantly struck us as the kind of place that valued arts and culture, it's such a vibrant and colourful community. Once we connected with a few people here and discovered how invested and excited they are to see Paisley flourish, their sense of pride and community in this little village, we knew we found the place we wanted to become a part of and contribute to”- Nicole Padbury, Owner, Sound+Colour

Meet Paisley youth entrepreneur Sadie, who owns and operates The Ordinary Orchid!
---------------
The Ordinary Orchid provides businesses and individuals with the opportunity to become more environmentally friendly. My name is Sadie Rahn, and I am the owner and creator of The Ordinary Orchid, which creates stickers that are 100% waste-free. Regular vinyl stickers are not recyclable and when disposed of, often leak into our oceans and waterways as harmful microplastics and plastic flakes. Sadly, these plastics are in virtually every marine ecosystem. The Ordinary Orchid’s stickers are created with 100% recyclable and post-consumer recycled sticker paper, recyclable adhesive and biodegradable ink. This means that when you are finished with them, you can simply put the stickers into your recycling bin because they are curbside recyclable in the paper stream. Many other eco-friendly or otherwise “recyclable” stickers are packaged on a non-recyclable backing or end up being filtered out of the recycling stream and redirected to landfill due to their adhesives, which cause jams in the recycling equipment. My stickers are unique in this way because the whole sticker, including the adhesive and backing is recyclable and compatible with recycling equipment.

I came up with the idea of an environmentally friendly sticker company after searching for ways to help our planet. I have always wanted to protect the environment and the life that it holds. I thought eco-friendly stickers would be a clever idea because there are very few truly zero-waste sticker companies out there. Making these stickers has allowed me to educate people on why we need to care for the planet and share my passion for the environment with others.

The support from the Bruce County Summer Company program is what made my idea become a reality. They helped me with all the questions that I had, including marketing and finance, and guided me through the process of building fundamentals that lead to a successful business. I like owning a business in Paisley because it is such an artsy town and community. I find that my business fits in well with the town’s unique blend of shops and services. The support from the community of Paisley and Bruce County has been astounding and I couldn’t be happier.

Meet Kevin and Melissa Kanmacher, owners of Saugie Suds Laundromat in downtown Paisley!
------------------
After settling in to the village of Paisley almost 20 years ago, we quickly realized that we wanted to be part of creating a thriving business community in our beautiful downtown. When the old, abandoned laundromat that we first used as newcomers came on the market, we saw it as our opportunity. Our goal was to create a clean and welcoming space that we would enjoy using.

Accessing support through the Saugeen Economic Development Corporation to create a business plan was very helpful in mapping out our path. Using the Spruce the Bruce program, we were able to secure a façade improvement grant that was a welcome boost with start-up expenses. More recently, we received a pivot grant that addressed our most popular suggestion to install a coin machine in a time when money transactions are best done hands-free. We are proud to be not only the cleanest and cutest little laundromat around but also the only coinless operation in Bruce county.

I think part of our success is connecting and engaging with our community – our customers, fellow Chamber members and the county at large. Finding the right business for us meant filling a need in our town. If you take care of your community by offering a high quality service and supporting community initiatives they will take care of you.

Meet the faces behind Paisley freshmart, Rob and Gail Fullerton.
----------------
My husband Rob and I have lived in Paisley for 25 years and before that we came from farms north of Paisley. We are both active in the community, in several organizations. In 2013, when the only village grocery store closed unexpectantly, we spent several months researching and planning to purchase, renovate and re-open the grocery store. That took an entire year and in June 2014 we opened Paisley Freshmart as a friendly, clean, community grocery store. We did not come from retail backgrounds so we had to learn everything as we went. Rob already worked full time so it was up to myself to learn the grocery business, manage a staffing team of 15-20 people, and create a store specific for our community and our valuable customers.

The community has been very supportive and as a result we have grown and expanded. For four years we also operated a general store at a local campground from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving weekend. In 2016 we grew again by purchasing, renovating and opening a new grocery store in Mildmay, 25 minutes south of Paisley.

Although we live in Paisley, are active in the community, and know most residents, we find this an easy place to do business. Reasonable taxes, fair local government, cooperative fellow business owners, and a friendly moderate-income community, make it conducive to small family-run businesses.

I would be pleased to chat with anyone considering opening a business in Paisley.
